I believe Sunset Beach is now just a sad pile of ruin. It went out of business years ago (owed quite a bit of money to the utilities and government from what I can recall) and was supposed to be taken over by new investors but that did not come into fruition, as far as I can recall. There were some fires started after it was in ruins and there is not much left, at all. We still snorkel up at that beach, however, as there are some interesting critters up there due to the old salt water pool cement structure now being in the water and submerged, etc.

I know someone who has more accurate information and details will jump in here and save me!

I believe Den Laman restaurant was recently torn down to make room for a new establishment, as well.

Many changes to Bonaire since you were there last, apparently, but I believe you will still love it. There still is NOT a functioning/official traffic light device on the island...that has remained the same! The people are still lovely and it has not been overly developed, at all.

I hope you will return and enjoy Bonaire again! Carole

PS I will see if I can find some pics of the "ruins" of the Sunset Beach Hotel for you and post them later. cb

Joe, I thought the Den Lamen was going to open and have an outside bar for the Sand$...did that not happen? Glen Reem, you know anything?

Den Laman was knocked down in August. A new small complex of rental apartments are going to be built there. On the first floor will be a sea side restaurant, gift store and photo shop, if the plans have not changed.

Thanks Alan! I think it was still there in July...but now I don't remember if I saw it or not when we made a couple of dives there...do you know if the rental apartments will be short or long term rentals?

THANKS for all the info people, could anyone suggest a place that would be close to what Sunset Beach was? I'm looking for a place on the beach(with a dive shop of course) that is cheap(or moderate pricing). And, i did like where the hotel was- in relation to being away from the general city/busy areas too!

Again, many thanks people!! Bob.

Robert,

Capt Don's is what I consider to be a suitable replacement for Sunset Beach Hotel :-) and if you look you might find some of the Sunset Beach Dive Center crew. No place, except Plaza Resort has a beach to match Sunset. Reef Scientifico (Don's house reef) is more than a match for Front Porch. There is also Buddy Dive and Lion's Inn right next door.

Also, Eden Beach, and (my favorite) Sand Dollar!

We're partial, we own at Sand Dollar, but you might want to consider them. They are right next door to the old Sunset Beach. Dive shop is right there and very complete studio, one, two and three bedroom condos.

Below is a picture of where Den Laman used to be

No Pink Bus? At the end of October we saw the pink bus at one of the sites around the Hilma Hooker. Also, where the Den Laman was the new building is going up pretty fast. I thought I heard that Bonaire Dive and Adventure would also be moving into the new building, but maybe it was just the photoshop.

A big thanks again for the info folks! BOTTOM LINE... where is the cheapest hotel/motel/whatever-room on the beachfront, with a dive facility(that does the am+pm trips out to the sites- with decent shore diving too) that has an onsite restaurant/bar??

I really don't care about other watersports, just diving with a little bit of snorkling.

And maybe a 4x4 to do some exploring...... opinions on this also welcomed!!! :-) :-)

Thanks again and again folks! Bob.

Poor Bob...once again we got off track! Sorry!

Recommendations:

Go to www.infobonaire.com, search Accommodations then click in your price range, and what the place has to offer.

Off the top of my head...Buddy's, Cap' Dons, Sand$, Plaza, Divi all have what you need. Prices vary, so check the link above for pricing. I'm sure I've missed some as well:-) Maybe once you narrow down where you think you would like to stay, then post again with your choices, and you will get a welcome response from those that have stayed there.

I've stayed at Sand$, great accommodations, reef, dive staff, restaruant...I used Buddy's dive shop this last summer as I was house sitting, and they were superb (You get a vehicle with your dive package). I haven't heard anything bad about any of the dive ops.

Cynde has hit the nail on the head with her list of places fitting your description and requirements. Depends on the money at that point. We love the Divi but are on the timeshare side. Some of the hotel rooms not on the ocean side might be lower cost than the prime ones. You might be able to get a good package rate from Caradonna Caribbean Travel, as well. They specialize in Bonaire and other dive destinations and are great at finding deals for folks. Good luck and keep us posted, OK? Carole

Joan & Alan,

How is your pic above oriented to Bonaire Dive & Adventure, the new dock and all??? Must have been taken from just in front of the new building with Sand Dollar to the right??? I haven't seen it for a year but....

The photo is taken standing in front of the Sand Dollar Gear rental building, if you look to the extreme right side of the photo you can see the ramp leading out to the dock

TKS. Just looking at your photo, one could imagine Bonaire Dive & Adventure having been magicked away. Not likely but I am interested, as you know. :–)
