Hi Everyone,
Sarah, I have some bad news,I had to have my dog Poppy put to sleep,on Saturday. the news wasnt good when they took more tests, apparently she had cancer of the spleen. It was all so sudden and a decision had to be made.So you can imagine I feel as if the bottom has dropped out of my world at the moment. but it was the kindest thing to do.
Did you take your steffi for her ear problems, is she ok now. Good luck at Uni.
That is the first I have heard of the earthquake, as it didnt affect us down this part of the country. must have been scary.

Morning Sarah, Eileen and Maria, I was really shocked to see the earthquake on the morning news when I awoke. Never think of us getting quakes. I think some of the sock waves did reach as far as North London from what I saw, not sure though. Annie B.

Maria, I am so sorry to hear your sad news. I know just how you are feeling as I went through the same thing with my old dog Bozley. He was 18 years of age, and I had him from a two month old pup. Such a sad time for you. Please accept a big comforting hug from me. Annie B.

dentist

Hi Eileen! Hi Annie! The worst part will probably be the first few minutes when they try to knock the crown off. My dentist cemented it on three weeks ago so it would stay til this appt. Of course, it stayed on FINE this time. Jeez. Since there's no nerve in the tooth underneath, I'm hoping it won't be more than uncomfortable.

earthquake

The only earthquake around here that I remember was around 1978. I was living in Maine and there was a pretty good rumbler - woke me up and shook the bed some. Very strange feeling - we aren't used to them in New England.

fall Warm, rainy and humid today. Suits my MOOD. LOL

It's OFFICIALLY Autumn:

fall Fall begins today at 7:31am, EDT.

Come said the wind to the leaves one day,
Come o're the meadows and we will play.
Put on your dresses scarlet and gold,
For summer is gone and the days grow cold.

Rusty, thats the only comfort for me right now is to think that she is happy in doggy heaven with her mum and her gran, who we lost a few years ago,and they all got on so well together.

Annie and Faith, sorry you have also been down that road, and know how sad I feel. and probably many other too. I suppose it is such a shock, as up until last week I didnt even know she was ill, just thought she was slowing down a bit with age.
You are right Faith they are family to doggy people. I expect in time I will have my happy memories. Such a shame they have such short lives compared to humans.

Rusty good luck with the dentist, if there is no nerve should be okay. and they are pretty good these days.

Maria,

Sorry to hear about Poppy. Takes the wind out of your sails when it is so sudden.

Rusty - Been there, done that! X2 I found that I had some "tenderness" for about a week. I think it is just the jaw and bones getting resettled after all the abuse. It wasn't bad enough even for 292's. Hope yours is easy.

I was just watching the SkyNews video on the earthquake - it was just before 1 am! Scarier when you wake from a sound sleep and don't know what's rattling the windows and shaking the walls.

aladdin Maria, I must have wished a thousand times in my life that our dogs could live as long as we do. If everyone had a devoted dog or cat the world would be a happy, peaceful place.

faith I still miss my Annie so much, I keep her picture here on the keyboard and I talk to her all the time. Even with her daughter and grand-daughter here, I can't get over her. They are each so special - but she was the BEST! LOL

droogs Hi Bill! Hi Freddie. I'm trying to look on the bright side of this dental stuff - it would be nice to have this front cap replaced and settled permanently - it's been on and off for ten years. AND maybe the docs will set me up with some percocet or vicodin or something. LOL

My condolences about Poppy... I can't help but wonder why such wonderful beings have such relatively short lifespans.

As to British earthquakes, I was in England last year, not too long after there was a quake offshore in the area around Tintagel. I had this wonderful hike planned around the Cornish coastline - alas, Mad Cow precautions closed off a lot of the trail, and in Tintagel (an absolutely beautiful section I did get to hike, though only as a day trip) part of the cliff had come tumbling down, so it was none too safe around there, either. Residents told me of all the thoughts they had when the BOOM of tons of rock falling reverberated through town, and nobody knew yet what had happened. Being from Chicago, as quake-free an area as you can find, it was fascinating to see the aftermath - luckily only cliffs; no structures or people were atop or below at the time.

Aha! Wild Bill has been found out! Oh Behave! Yes, Dear Jimmy did confess to "lusting in his heart", didn't he. Grounds for 10-15 these days don't you think?

Rusty - You created that gif didn't you! X-Rays are bad for you. I don't think I'll go under that sign!

On another topic - Nice sunny, but "fall is here", day today. Better go to the basement and start sharpening the igloo construction tools.

OK, I'm back.. shacken but not stirred!

Maria, I'm so sorry that you had to have Poppy put to sleep. We know that we're doing what's right for the animal, but it doesn't make it any easier. I know.. But I can see Poppy right there with mum and gran, happy chasing bones.. A BIG HUG from me too... As for Steffi, she's having drops twice daily. She has a slight infection in her left ear, but she'll be fine. Giving her the drops is hard work though.. gosh, can she wriggle!

Hi Anita! The closest experience I've had to yours was when a huge sinkhole opened in Winter Park FLA in the very early 80s. I was a block away at work on the radio and got a call from a listener. I hadn't a clue what a sinkhole was - I was picturing something like a pothole in the road.

sinkhole

I drove down later and the edge of the road was in the hole along with the back of a luxury car dealership. Couple of Porsches were twenty feet down the slope and half the public swimming pool. I went by a couple years ago and it's just a round pond now with folks fishing along the edge!

sink

Charles Osgood of CBS Radio even responded with a poem: "In Winter Park, Florida, outside Orlando, a troublesome thing can be found; an impressively spacious, expanding, ferocious, remarkable hole in the ground."

Hi Martin!

Florida is mostly limestone (coral/dead organisms) from being underwater eons ago and there are loads of caverns underground where water has flowed thru and carved out the soft substrate. As the water level drops in the aquifer these caverns can't support the *ceiling* and fall in. I've seen a couple since then in Central FLA but never one as large as that one!

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By Martin de Weger on Monday, September 23, 2002 - 12:24 pm:     Edit PostPrint Post

Rusty, I'm glad you told me now and not before last weekend. I have been cycling and walking through some caves, and we even had a party in one. It's strange, beeing 30 meters / 90 feet below the surface and not getting wet... :)

The pool is on the left center and the car dealer on the right center. The street on the right side is a main drag, my fave Chinese restaurant was just a block down the street. There is/was a hole in the bottom of the hole and water would rise for a while then drop out again in a whoosh. Finally it began to fill slowly, but the city decided they had to plug it for safety's sake. It's stable now and still a tourist destination.

I dove a small cavern (Devil's Den) that had a hole maybe ten feet across at the surface. It was so cool - water was probably only twenty feet deep with another thirty-forty feet of air/space above your head. You could float on your back and look up and see trees and the sky and sunshine out the hole while you were in near darkness. You got in by walking down a narrow (slippery) stairway/ladder. It was a little scary tho, thinking about the ceiling caving in!

Accommodation: Self catering apartments, close to the dive centre - approx
£10 per person per night with your own room; usually 2 to an apartment.

Vehicle hire: One or two minibuses will be needed for transport to the dive
sites, cost to be divided amongst the group; approx £8 per person per day.

Hi Buddies!

dentist The dentists couldn't get the crown off. Is this irony or what? So Dr. Sheehan let me go with a no charge and I had Dr. Arguelles use the time to take impressions for upper and lower partial plates for a few missing back teeth.

dentist Dr. Arguelles and I were laughing that if the crown was in the top impression when he removed it - we were going to scream!

crown Yeah Cynde, my crown's been falling off for the last ten years! I feel like a fractured fairy tale! LOL
