Congratulations Mr. Jerry. It is a sound and wise move. You are a mainstay of this board in every way. We shall all profit from your expertise, and where this wonderful thing called BT is headed. Thank you for stepping up.

On another note, I received an email from Tim, live from Afghanistan. He is at a place right now called Camp Leatherneck. It is a staging point for all Marine Corps ops in Afghanistan. He will be moving out to another area very soon. Every Marine Corps company has what is called a TAOR or Tactical Area of Responsibility. They are much more remote and supplied by Camp Leatherneck, which is the lifeline, if you will. Here is a great documentary by National Geographic on the inter workings of Helmand Province, which is controlled by the Marine Corps in Afghanistan, if you care to see it.

Tim has found out some interesting things. Being that he has a degree in finance, the Corps has designated him to also be a civil affairs officer, as well as an artillery and air FO. (Forward Observer) He is the guy that calls the hurt in on the Taliban.

However, he will also be assessing what the remote villages need in the way of wells, schools for children (AND GIRLS) agricultural needs, medical needs, etc. He will be attending an Army school in Kabul (The Capital) to learn how to write up the procurement forms to get these things to the people. He also has his own Pashtun interpreter, who will be working with the people to stop growing poppy (heroin) that the Taliban uses to get arms. This is a very very complicated problem that has been going on for sometime. It is another battle all by itself, as it is their only livlihood. So, that is where we are so far in this deployment. Please keep Tim, and all the Marines in the 3rd Bn. 1st Marines in your prayers and thoughts. By the way, one of our own, Ken Dodge,(Ruthie's husband) was with this storied Marine Corps Battalion in another war, so very far away. Thanks for reading and caring.

Jim, Our prayers and thoughts are with Tim. 3/1 was a special time in my life and I'm sure Tim will do well. Speedy completion of his tour and home to those who care for him.
