Anyone been to L'anai? I'm going in late December/early January.

Any dive recommendations?

PS I'll be writing another magazine story that will be published in Portugal, based on this trip.

We stayed for 5 days at the Four Seasons at Manele Bay, it was beautiful! It was October when we were there and not extremely warm but comfortable, I did get cold in the water. There are no dive shops on L'anai (at least not when we were there) Boat charters from Lahaina did the boat dives, you can arrange it through your hotel. Many beautiful dives, The cathedrals were the coolest!

Yes, there aren't any dive shops on Lanai, most if not all the land that was once a huge pineapple plantation is now owned by Microsoft.

We've dove the backside of lanai many times and the boat guides always point out Mr Gates house and how he now owns all the island and only lets his personal friends build on the island--guess he doesn't want any rift raft in the neighbor hood.

If your looking to Boat dive in Lahaina I would suggest Lahaina divers. Shotgun and Shotgun two were great dives.

I usually stay in Kihei and do both shore and boat diving. If you would like a guide to shore dive call Doug at Shaka Divers or stop by a dive shop and pickup a book called Maui diving made easy by Charles--can't think of his last name. There are two books with similar name, so look for the authors first name.
If you want to boat dive in Kehei call Ed Robinson Diving, great crew and you'll be close to the Molokini Crater.

In a 13 month period of time I was on Maui 3 times, and was very happy with the diving, and the ease of getting there. Then I found Bonaire--haven't been back since.

I dove Lanai on a couple different trips. Like others on this post I used Lahaina divers out of Lahaina, Maui.
At that time of the year you may hear the singing of humpback whales while diving.

We did a trip to Lanai with Ed Robinson and we got to the Cathedrals to find a Humpback and calf heading towards us, we all jumped in with snorkels but did not see anything. The whale song was awesome it made our chests resonate as is was so powerful.

Brian. Same here, while diving the Cathedrals I heard whale songs but unfortunately did not see them. The dive guide however told us of occasions where they have seen whales while diving there and around Maui.
We did see whales from shore while driving along the coast of Maui.
