Well last night was a very difficult night for our household.

When I got home Pete and I decided to go for a walk (OK - it's a training walk for the 3 day but still). We also decided to take the two little dogs because they love to walk and we hoped that they would do better than the big dogs (the big dogs are walking wimps).

It all started very well, Pete was walking with Spec and I was walking with Boo. About 1 mile into the walk Boo started going very slowly and falling behind (NOT her style). I stopped our walk and turned us back toward home. She kept on slowing down so I picked her up and carried her for a while. Then I put her down and she did OK for a little bit...a hundred yards or so and then she slowed down again. I picked her up and carried her back home (not an easy feat as we live very much up hill from our walking area). I had almost gotten her home (was at the bottom of our property line basically) when she started to cough and blood started coming out of her mouth and nose. Pete then ran home with Spec and got the car and off we went to the emergency clinic. Before we got there Boo died in my arms. This is my little girl that I have had for 9 years. She and her brother Spec had been abandoned at 8 weeks and well, through a number of network contacts they came to me. Boo was also my little girl that has had 2 cancer surgeries - the most recent one in July. But at least now she is chasing rabbits, running pain free and waiting on the other side of the bridge...

This is Boo when she first came into my life when it was just me.

Boo

boo

boo

boo

And more recently doing her wolfe imitation, hanging with her BIG brother, and just being Boo.

boo

boo

boo

Bye bye Boo baby - we all miss you already.

Thanks everyone - it's a tough day.

And yes CB, very much. I couldn't stop the bleeding and I doubt they would have been able to even if we had been closer to the clinic.

Mara,
Hugs and prayers from here. I know this pain and it's gut wrenching! Our dear Yorkie, Kibbles, was at the bridge to greet little Boo.
Will be thinking about you and the whole family. Extra hugs to the other furkids as I know they feel that emptiness as well.

So true, Kobi, when our kitty, Chippie passed away, our JR, Ginger missed her so much, didn't eat for almost two weeks and kept a watchful eye out for her for quite a while. I know it was a dog and cat here, but they actually did sleep together at night, I think Chippie thought she was a dog, came in & out the doggie dog just like Ginger. Miss them both, but now they are all happy playing without pain on the other side of that bridge too.

Yeah it is amazing how they fill in the gaps or squeeze into the spaces that we didn't even think were there. I know the other ones (Spec, Nia, Mozart) miss her too. Spec realized it first of course because he's her brother "real brother", he'd been on the walk with us and I'm sure there is some kind of bond like that between siblings. There were scents of her all over me when I returned. I didn't realize how much and how covered I was I guess until the other dogs just kept sniffing and sniffing. I had changed my shirt but not my pants and shoes. I know they realize something has happened as they were in a much more "cuddly" and in a somber mood last night. I'll see how they this afternoon when I get home from work.

Mara and Pete:

So sorry to hear the news. Always difficult. Here is something that I got from a vet years ago for this event that has helped a lot. It always brings tears to me eyes but gives me hope in the end.

description

And here is the text of that poem:

THE RAINBOW BRIDGE

There is a bridge connecting Heaven and Earth.
It is called the Rainbow Bridge
because of its many colors. Just this side
of the Rainbow Bridge there is a land of
lush green grass.

When a beloved pet dies, the pet goes to
this place. There is always food and water
and warm spring weather. The old and
frail animals are young again. Those who
are maimed are made whole again.
They play all day with each other.

There is only one thing missing. They are
not with their person who loved them on
Earth. So, each day they run and play until
the day comes when one suddenly looks
up! The nose twitches! The ears are up!
The eyes are staring! And this one
suddenly runs from the group!

You have been seen, and when you and
your special friend meet, you take
him or her in your arms and embrace.
Your face is kissed again and again, and
again, and you look once more into the
eyes of your trusting pet.

Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge
together, never again to be separated.
