So I walked into the Nursery with my fruit in hand and "Matt, the fruit expert" immediately goes "Oh wow!" I said is that a good oh wow or a bad oh wow? He said good, that's a Pineapple Guava and we have a really hard time getting them to grow around here, they are native to South America. He cut it open and ate it and said it was delicious.

I waited a few minutes to make sure he didn't keel over writhing in pain. He saw the apprehension on my face so he got out his horticulture book and made me read the pages!

Sooooo....Did I ever tell you guys I have a pineapple guava tree in my yard?

Congratulations Agent 99. Apparently not everyone can grow a pineapple guava tree!

Curiously, how long have you lived there that it took X number of years to bear fruit? And was that a normal "life cycle' for lack of better words for that species?

We have lived in this house for 12 years! Matt said some fruit trees need a companion in order to bear fruit and maybe someone else in the neighborhood planted one and that's why we didn't have any fruit until now. So, I guess my pineapple guava tree is dating now, or apparently cavorting with strange trees! :-)

So the tree's got somebody on the side, huh?!! LOL :-)

Congrats on getting the mystery solved! Hope the tree continues to produce nice fruit and you guys can enjoy it.

Great!
i'm a little puzzled however by the Wikipedia description "the size of a chicken egg"and yours " the size is about 3-5 inches" . I guess your growing conditions are ideal.

I was reading all the comments, so I had to go back a few posts to find out why we were talking about tree's dating! :-) Interesting..... :-)

Mickey why would you be surprised by an inaccurate entry in Wikipedia? Anyone can modify it.

Glad you found out what it is. Happy munching!

Tribs
Well it seems like the size of both Guava and Pineapple Guava could vary that much. Wikipedia may not be perfect but it sure has a lot of good info in it.

I guess I was part right (guava), I have never heard of pineapple guava.

It is a very good fruit, you can make jelly out of it!! :-)
