I was just talking to a friend and telling her about our attempted break in to my van last week, and how the thieves are probably looking for high end radios and DVD players. She told me of a new target. GPS owners that program in "home" and have the unit mounted on the window are the new target. The guys break into the car, snatch the unit, and hit home, knowing that you're at the mall, theater, doctor, etc, and are taken right to your home knowing that you aren't there. They figure they have a little time to break in and see what they can steal.

I don't have one, but she and her hubby do, but they keep their's in the console when not in use. Just some more helpful info if you have one.....

These are not good times :-(

Gail, never even thought about that! We take ours off and keep it with us, don't even leave it in the car. What theives are also doing, is they look in the windshield, and they see the "mark" that the suction cup has made, so they know there might be one in the car. We had a boat neighbor that had his car broken into at the marina, and they took his.

Those darn thieves are creative.
A few years ago a thief broke into several vehicles at work looking for stuff to sell. They broke my trucks passenger window, rooted around and didn't take anything. At least they could have taken something after causing damage to my "baby". Curses on all thieves!!! They need to get a job.

Gail - there is a flaw in that reasoning. Just because I'm at the mall doesn't mean my husband & kids are with me.

We didn't like the suction cup on windshield set-up, so we have moved to this in both cars:

I just keep it under the seat until I need it & no sign of a GPS.

Sue - understood. I thought that too. But this came from a police warning that my friend had heard, and I figure the smart thugs would case the home to make sure it was empty......

She also mentioned the suction cup mark, and said they wouldn't use it at all.

Technology just keeps advancing quicker than I can keep up!

I have a Garmin portable dash mount so it does not stick to the window. I simply move it onto the floor & no one can see anything. Also a lot easier to move it from car to car. It works great!

I really had to chuckle when my car was recently broken into.... the only thing in there was a really old mp3 player, a really old portable cd player and my briefcase (which they took) that only held forms and paperwork to fill out for setting up Red Cross shelters.
Somehow I doubt they will volunteer at our next emergency, but if they do they will have the proper forms :-)

now had they gotten into Guy's truck it would have been a whole different story - especially when he was on the SWAT team. Now its all helicopter, fire, and water rescue equipment.
