Greeting Everyone! I am a very close friend to John Stigaard, he past away several weeks ago after his fight with cancer. Wednesday before he passed on Friday, John had asked that my self and my wife release his ashes at Key Largo in the "Winch Hole" (this is where John Certified to dive)Asa his wife and I spoke about bring half of them to Bonaire- and releasing them He loved the Island and spoke many times of it. Does anyone know if that is possible? Any type Permits needed? Here in USA I am not asking- my rule is- "IT is sometimes easier to ask forgiveness, than permission". Thanks for your answers in advance. I am the the current PResident of the Atlanta Reef Dwellers Scuba Club- John was President for 2-terms and done a wonderful job. This should take place next year sometimes. If you do not want to discuss this on the board- please email me direct: president@atlantareefdweelers.org or david@wan2dive.com

Welcome to BT David. A very noble thing you are doing, I'm sure John's would appreciate that. I have seen remains transported a few times and my advice is don't do it. A friend lost her daughter's ashes for a couple of days, why, because the only legal way was registered US mail which is slow and in this case not reliable. If she had not labeled them human remains they could have been sent reliably overnight.

So that is my advice is do not label it human remains and you might be much better off. All this is IMHO.

David, welcome to Bonaire Talk. I wish it were under happier circumstances. John was a wonderful, kind, gentle man, and contributed a lot to Bonaire Talk. He was a friend to many. Please pass our condolences to Asa. Also, YGM.

Hi, I'm a Lurker on Bon talk just because I love the
beach and now live in Tennessee so I like to go and
look once in a while.
I spread the Ashes of my Mother a year ago on the
beach in St. Augustine, Florida. The Funeral Home told
me you do not need any special permits or permission
in the states as long as you are not planning on a tent
and chairs and making a big scene. We did services at
the pavillion at the beach ramp and those who wanted
to join us on the beach did so. Everyone thought it
was a very nice service. Also the Hotel we stayed at had
a tour boat that will take out groups and you can do
it out to sea without the tourist wondering whats up.
I also work for the Postal Service and they no
longer require Ashes to be sent registered mail. The box
on the other hand is simply treated as any other
package therefore you have the chance of it being packed
under a heavier box which could cause damage. Overseas
shipping may be different. Call the post office and ask
the Post Master. If you can only do U.S. Mail to Bon
he/she may can help with the overseas rules.
Good Luck Lurker
Debbie :-)

My plan is to put the ashes in my dive bag/Stuff/Video Gear and fly over with them and release under water while diving. Maybe a zip lock bag or two...Not sure about airport checking my luggage??? I would love to see the look on their faces! DNS

Sounds like a perfect plan David :-)
I can imagine John laughing all the way.
Keep it Simple.
btw- I'm a great believer in the Forgiveness rather than Permission theory!

Please add my condolences.

David. I think that is the best idea. Just do that. Do ask don't tell always works best for me.
