Need some good thoughts for Michael's grandmother. She found out about a week ago that she has tongue/mouth cancer. The woman never smoked a day in her life. She's 90, and I got this not from MIL.

quote:

We took Grandma to an oncologist at Hoag on Wednesday. She was physically worn out and anxious. The doctor suggested that if we chose treatment radiation would be the best way to go. After talking to some experienced people, we decided to contact hospice and found out that she qualifies, even though the cancer is not life threatening at this moment. However, as the cancer grows she will not be able to swallow and breathing will be difficult. The treatments all would cause her great pain and the end result would be the same as without treatment. So she is on pain and anxiety meds, will not be transported to the hospital, does not have to go to any more doctor appointments, and will be kept pain free. She sleeps most of the day now and has care givers two hours in the morning and evening and one hour at lunch time. She is eating very little. She just wants to go and be with Grandpa. She has lost 14 lbs in the last month and I expect that she will eat less and less. She is relieved to not have to go through anything more. I don't know how long she will live, but I plan to go down again in a couple of weeks. She doesn't talk much on the phone, it is difficult

This is Michael's last living grandparent, and probably the one I've been closest to over the years...I'm a little choked up...I hate C....My SIL's mom just passed from lung cancer, and at 93 they took the same road of not going with treatment...C sucks...

Please send good thoughts for Diane, as I know the next few weeks/months will be difficult. Michael and I are going to go see her tomorrow...I just have tears streaming.

Thanks gang...but in my choked up post, It's PEGGIE...not Diane, Diane is Michael's mom.

It has been a blessing to have her with us for so long, it's just the upcoming suffering that really really gets to me...one should not have to end their life in such pain...it is just not fair. She didn't weight much to begine with, so 14 pounds is a LOT for her...

I agree, Cynde! Any suffering is just so hard and sad to sit and watch. I hope they can keep her comfortable and you guys can be with her to keep her happy. She will surely feel all the good thoughts from BT. Please share that with her when you see her!!!

Oh Cynde... I am so very sorry to hear this. My SIL's father died of esophageal cancer 10 years ago... it was horrible - by the time they found it, it was inoperable. He was in the same shape as Peggie... couldn't eat, couldn't talk, in hospice with excellent pain management.

Big hugs to you and Michael (and the rest of his family) as you go through this with Peggie. May her journey end with as little pain and as much dignity as possible, with her loved ones by her side.

Becky, you mention dignity, this is a woman that came down every morning and fixed grandpa breakfast (when he was alive and she was well). She ALWAYS had her "face" on...always. I don't think I've ever seen her without her make-up. She has always been a classy woman...I hope her journey is quick...I know I'd want mine to be.

Big hugs to you and Michael Cynde. The pain management seems to be the best for her. I don't know what to say to ease your pain I just know you are a good person, and C- Sucks... Ron

Oh Cynde, I am so sorry to hear this. Please give hugs to Michael and yourself from me.

It is wonderful that she has lived a full life and I hope her days are pain free. It certainly sounds like this course of action will be the best one and Hospice will take very good care of her. Again, I am very sorry to hear this and I've decided "C" is my most despised enemy, it causes too much pain and grief to so many wonderful people. Your in my thoughts my friend.

I just can't stop crying dang it!!!

Cynde & Michael, so very sorry to hear about Grandma Peggie. I hope she has hospice care like the Grandfather did...I know there are no words to make it easier for you to deal with this. It's so hard to watch parents or grandparents age & leave us. I lost my Mom 51\2 years ago, & it still feels like yesterday. May Peggie be pain-free & feel the love you all have for her.

Oh Cynde...I'm so sorry to hear this. I do hope that Hospice and family love will make this time for her go painfree and w/ peace. My Grandma's name was Peggy too. Nothin' better than a "Grandma Peggy/ie"...

Grandpa wasn't a "George" was he? Mine was and I think it's so cool that now G & I are Pegi & George.
