Seeing the Northern Lights is on my "bucket list" and I am wondering if any BTers have ever had the pleasure to see them, and what is the best time of year, and place:-)

I have seen them many times. I had a large wine cellar at one point.

Nope never seen them and I have been above the artic circle, of course I might have seen them if I could see through the pressure hull and a couple hundred feet of seawater.

Our favorite song on the submarine was;

Are the stars out tonight?
I don't know if its cloudy or bright
if only my eyes could see through the pressure hull

Eileen, that would be so cool!

Or, we could go to Finland to see them. I saw this in a mag, glass igloos and you lay and look up at the lights.

Ya put the aquavit in an empty milk carton, fill with water and freeze it.

Blotto, blotter, what's the difference Vince?

I like to say Aurora Borealis.

Is Aquavita swedish hair tonic?
You can call me Sven

In all truth (as opposed to minimal truth), we are going to Anchorage 10 days after our september trip to Bonaire and taking a couple of free days to drive up toward Fairbanks in hope of seeing them (and capturing with the picture thingie).

If there's anybody out there with borealichasing (yup I make up words) experience I'd love to hear from ya.

were 60s before the 70s? I forget.

Cynde... When I lived in northern MN I was fortunate to see the northern lights often - winter, summer... any time of year. The first time I saw them I was going to an emergency call late at night and had picked up my boss for some reason (probably a calving and I was new and unsure if I could get it done right). These green streaks were dancing around in the sky and I didn't know what they were. He almost died laughing when he told me what they were. :-)

I am presently on the way back from Alaska. I stopped at Watson Lake, Yukon and watched the Northern Lights at a theater there. I was told that one can see them at Yukon and Alaska but in the winter.

Have seen them from central NH twice, North Shore of MA a few times (not in recent years because of increased light pollution), and almost nightly during a camping trip to Banff, Alberta, Canada. Definitely worthy of the "bucket list." All occasions were during clear dry nights of late Summer or Fall
