I just received a call from my daughter Kate in San Francisco. Some of you may know she is a doctor at the University of California San Francisco. She had a case this week where a father and three sons were in a car. The dad was 40 and the sons were 20, 18, and 15. There was a drive by shooting. The father was killed, the 20 year old was killed and Kate had to take the 15 year old off life support yesterday. The 18 year old was not scratched, but obviously witnessed the entire incident. She is really upset.

Jim,
It will take time for both her and the 18 year-old to heal. All you can do is be a calm supporting parent and be there for her in any manner she needs.
Good Luck to you and ~~~~~~good healing vibes~~~~~~~ to both Kate and the sole survivor. I cannot even begin to imagine how many times this young man will ask himself "Why them and not me?"

Mare

Jim,
Very saddened to read this. How many times can one ask why? My sympathies go out to your Kate and the sole survivor. Words cannot express the sorrow for all involved.
My prayers go out to all.

Mare, that is exactly what Kate told me tonight. He said it over and over. My Katie is usually very up and happy. She was very distraught about this one. David, as a doc, I guess you know better than we about this stuff. Just had to pass this on. I just hope they find these maniacs.

After I talked to Kate, I did some research this morning. The good news is they got the ba$t*** that capped this family. They were simply trying to back up after making a mistake on a one way. The suspect is a member of MS-13, probably one of the worst and brutal gangs in the United States. We have them in Philadelphia as well. My friend Joe who is a Philadelphia cop has stories on them that would make your skin crawl. If you are interested, here is the news story. I sent it to Kate, but it is her 4:30 AM. It is 7:30 AM EST.

Just heartbreaking, I can't take hearing news like this and there is so much in the news today. Jim, I don't even like Phila. anymore, will only go there to get to the airport, nothing else as the crime is just out of control. So many useless shootings. I'm sorry I could not read the article, your post was enough to read, but my heart goes out to your daughter and that young man, I hope he has someone to lean on for support.

Deb, I never realized you were so close. My wife Kathi is from Stratford, NJ originally. She went to Paul VI for high school. Her parents and sister still live there. I agree with your assessment of Philadelphia. Even the airport is bad. Unfortunately, I grew up in the inter-city when it was a wonderful place to live. My daughter Megan and her husband live in the Northern Liberties section and love it there. My son Ryan lives in Fairmount. I raised my kids in the burbs and they moved back to where I came from. Go figure.

Glad they caught the POS that committed this crime! MS13 has made their way into my little, itty, bitty area. Our office building, we own, got tagged by these gang jerkweeds; hate MS13!

Thanks for sharing the link!

Jim, this seems so wrong. I can only wish you lots of strength.
I'm always amazed on how medic personnel is able to cope with these things.
It seems such a waste of good lives. All I can do is wondering why. What is the purpose of this all? Who needs what to learn? What lesson can be so important that practically a whole family is wiped out and in this senseless way.

Thanks for letting us help you and your daughter to carry this burden.

There is no way to express ones feelings about this needless act. Jim, I'm sure Kate did everything in her power. I have the upmost respect for people like Kate.

Jim,

Let Kate know the memory will stay but the pain will ease. As for the person/s responsible, whomever it is, they solidify my belief in capital punishment. No debate will sway me this time.

Jim, I'm so sorry, healing thoughts for Kate, the surviving son, family, friends, and the community. Senseless is right.

Smack, I'm right there with ya on CP...they don't deserve to have a life in prison after what they have done.

Koodos to the good people of San Fran who provided the tips to the police to apprehend this malevolent creature. If convicted certainly sounds like a death penalty case to me.

My heart goes out to Kate. I've seen how much those kinds of calls affect Guy even many years later. Kate has to remember that she did her best and was there for a reason --- her expertise and compassion. I'm so grateful that she has you and Kathi to lean on.

I'm still torn on CP but I do know that prisons have simply become breeding grounds for ruthless gangs. Something has to change. I like the idea of a walled off island where all heinous criminals have to live, on their own - grow their own food, build their own buildings, etc. I know sounds stupid....

Hugs to you and Katie.

No it's not. That is how Australia and Georgia began. Antarctica is wide open. Give them a shovel and a winter jacket. Drop them off at Mac Murdo Sound and say, "Good luck." We'll be back for you when your sentence is up. Meet right here in June of 2028. Call if you need anything.

That's exactly my thought. Let the predators prey on each other....

Please pass Guy's concern on to Kate... he's been there far too many times in the last 30 years as a paramedic.

Jim, I think you are on to something...hmmm...have any of you seen the special "locked up abroad"? the worst was Venezuela, let's send them all there. The guards "rarely go behind the gates" the prisoners had guns, knives, greneds, the guards opened the gate and threw them in. Rough justice? Not a bad idea.

Jim, I work at UCDavis Medical Center (the only other Level 1 Trauma Center in N. Cal) and unfortunately, we have the same situations going on in Sacramento...many of my patients are in the hospital for the same horrific reasons...the proliferation of guns on the streets is out of control, a definite increase from the 90's.
I'm definitely a fan of more gun control (would actually prefer to have a GUN FREE society) but seems we are in the minority....just saw a clip on TV where they noted the NRA is suing a California city that is trying to ban handguns.....:-(

Babs, The only reason the "BAD GUYS" don't walk up to your door and kick it in is they don't know what they will find on the other side!!!
NO BRAG, JUST FACT!

I went to grad school at both Temple and PENN, two very inter-city schools in Philadelphia. At night, around 10 PM I got out of my classes. To walk back to my car, I carried a .38 special that I got from my uncle when he died. No, I did not have a permit. I would have never even blinked to use it if people tried to stop me from going to my car and just going home. I had babies then. I pulled it once, and the people just took off who were trying to stop me from going to my car. There would have been four dead people if they had not made the right choice.

In some countries, prisoners must keep their own communal houses, clean their own clothes, feed themselves, GO TO WORK, and help on the prison farm when collective labor is required. They live in their own society, but are trained to live as a integral part of that society. In this way, these diseased people are reintegrated into the general population.
