Just heard from Dylon, he's in Texas now, with the hands on training (F-16s). After he's done in October, his first permanent (I know, no such thing as permanent...lol) will be Hurlburt Field, in Florida. It's near Destin, and I guess just a meer 33 miles from Pensicola (uh...can you say the USS Orlanski (sp)?

Any bters in that area? I see at least one dive trip to FL in 2009:-)

That's about 7 hours away from us. I've only been up that way once, but it's really pretty!

BC, Terry and I did that dive the first month it was open to the public. It was so new only the beginnings of growth were there.
Here's a couple of pics to wet your whistle.

Great gang! Linda, thanks for the pics:-) We will have to have a FL meet for sure when we come out. It's not a matter of "if" it's gonna be "when". He needs our support [read, we can get to dive Florida] lol:-)

BH, the kid will be 20 in october, and is single, and lives on base, he's got a good thing going, let me tell ya. I don't think the expense will hit him too hard:-)

When Tim finishes TBS in Virginia, he is slated to go to flight school in Pensacola for a year and a half. Kathi and I have talked extensively about diving the "Mighty O." Lieutenant Dan (Tim) (that's what I call him) will probably dive it with us as well as he is a certified diver too. The decks are pretty deep. Aquawoman would probably do them, but the bridge, etc is in about 80 ft. of water. To see or be on a carrier is just absolutely incredible. However, to see this monstrosity underwater would have to be a thrill. Let's be like a Nike commercial and JUST DO IT!!!

This would be great! I have been wanting to do this dive for a while now. Isn't this the one that requires advanced certification and at least 100 dives? There is one on our "to do" list that has those requirements, but the list is at home. Our problem....Wes doesn't log his dives. UGH!

I just spent some time going through the website that Kristi so graciously posted for us above. It is really cool. Thanks Kristi. I vaguely remember the O having a massive fire. I did not realize how many people died in that blaze. It was really bad.

BC, Just give us a call or shoot us an e-mail with when you plan on being there, and we'll be there, too.
The Island starts @ 70', Flight deck @135', Hangar deck @ 150' and bottom @ 212'. I got those stats from a web site.
When we did the dive the DM told us that the flight deck was deeper than 130'/recreational diving. But if we wanted to we could extend the hand with the computer on it up and our fins down and quickly touch the deck with fin tips. If any of us came up with alarms going off when we came up (he did check each one of us)we couldn't do the next dive.
We used MBT Divers. www.mbtdivers.com

If you would like to see my Kodak "album", just shoot me your e-mail address. Mine is on my profile.

It looks so cool, my group did it last year and they said there were many jellies. They swam through them the whole time..It is a long drive for us though, about 10 hrs and just a weekend to do it.

I hear ya, Kristi. It's a long a## drive for Terry and I, too. 8+ hrs. If you made it a 3-day weekend that would relieve some of the stress.

Jim, O...M...G....does this mean we will FINALLY get to hook up again??? when does tim graduate? Dylon won't be going there until the end of October. He's done in Texas sometime then, and then will come home and get his car and things, then go to the base. If timing is right, we need to JUST DO IT together!

tribs, it's probably like the Yukon in wreck ally, they require so many cold water dives, and
AOW to dive. Michael doesn't keep a log book either, he uses mine. We have never had to show our log book when diving the Yukon, or wreck alley. Oh wait, I forgot, according to CB, the Yukon does not exist, and no boats go there...lol!

Linda, what type of screening did you have to go to the Might O? Show a log book???

From the website of the boat we use, for the Yukon:

quote:

You'll notice that we've stayed away from the term "Advanced" in rating and describing our dive sites. That is unfortunately due to the watering down of the Advanced dive certification over the years, to the point that it really does the title injustice. Simply holding an advanced certification does not make you an advanced diver these days. We do not require a specific card to do these sites; a OW diver with 50 cold water dives is better suited than an "Advanced" diver with 20. No certification is a recognizable substitute for the number of dives required above for each rating/dive site.

Marine Corps Officers Basic School is six months long. It is a very demanding course filled with all kinds of stuff Marine. He started it May 28, which means he will finish Nov. 28th or there about. He is in a wedding next Saturday wearing his dress blues. I'm going to the wedding. Tim is best man. You might remember the Sgt. who gave Tim his first salute in the shutterfly pictures.

Anyway, he is getting married to a girl from Sweden that he met at Camp LeJeune, NC when she was an exchange at Emory. They are both going to look awesome. She is in the pictures too.

CB, Yes we showed them our log books, C and Nitrox cards. They did an extensive "talk" at the shop and on the boat - very safety conscious.

Funny thing happened on the way to "Oriskany"
While search Oriskany I bumped into this under Orlanski, a marine phenomena that could be of interest to some of us.

BC, when I get home tonight I'll ask Terry, but I think they looked at mine. Of course that was right after it was open for diving, so they may have been extra cautious. I alway log my dives - draw pictures and write down all the creatures I see. Helps with the photo albums.
Give the dive shop a call or e-mail them to make sure. You have time if you're making plans for 2009.
