This was sent to me by a friend who volunteers with the Marine Mammal Center here in Santa Barbara. She gives countless hours id'ing whales and teaching the public.

Great stuff, Boom. The only issue I have with this, is the preaching to the choir problem. We are mostly divers and already do these things and more. The trick is to get this message out to the wider world and start educating the teaming masses, they are the ones that need to hear and heed this.

Boom - I'm not so surprised. Even though they are chemists (and lord knows I am surrounded considering I work for a Chemical company) if they aren't environmental chemists OR aren't involved in "green" solutions there is always the thought that it can be better with Chemistry. One of my company's main products is PET - plastics basically. And while we find that plastics are the source of many of our problems really - practically everything we use contains something from a chemical company. Computer - loaded with the stuff, toothbrush, many cosmetics/beauty aid products, etc. You know those shower gels with the little scrubbing beads? Look and see what they are made of - yep,you guessed it - plastic. And what happens to that plastic - well, it doesn't dissolve. It goes down the drain and right into our water system. So no more of those scrubby gels for me.

I use my own coffee travel mug at the coffee shop I visit every morning on the way in to work. It's a REALLY cute hot pink leather and stainless steel one that has "The Breast Cancer Research Foundation" embossed in the leather. And the top is the coolest top I have ever seen. After seeing that artwork about styrofoam and plastic cups and what not I started thinking about the styrofoam that I use and what I could do about it. So this was one of the things that I thought of. I also sent an email to the coffee shop and about reusable mugs and some things that they might think about to promote their shop AND help the environment. They are looking into it - though there might be some "health" issues.

Amongst my co-workers at lunch, I am pretty much forbidden to say anything about anybody's food. This all stemmed from ragging on somebody's shrimp one day. It's unfortunate that the masses are not very interested in by-catch and bottom dragging discussions. What the he11 is wrong with these people?

Cecil you and Guy are in the same boat. Back in the day, he started a campaign for the fire stations to ban canned tuna that wasn't 'dolphin-safe'. The old-timers still tease him about being a dolphin-hugger. Works for me.
