This might be fun. And it'll give us all a chance to brag like crazy about how travelled we are.

Where have you dived? What's your "house reef" if you dive at home? What's on your wish list?

My home base is Northern California, and that's where I do most of my diving: Monterey/Big Sur, and the Sonoma/Mendocino Coasts.

I've also been to:
Montana
Tahoe
Southern California
Channel Islands
Florida Keys
Cozumel
Belize
Hawaii Bali Bikini
Coast of Kenya
Sea of Cortez
Roatan
Maui
Chuuk
Ponepei
Majuro(snorkeling only)

Hmm....that doesn't look like much; I'd better get busy!

Wish list: Solomon Islands and Kiribati for starters.

How about you? C'mon, folks..i want to have to get my atlas out when I get home tonight!

Oh and our "house reef" is Clear Springs Scuba Park. It's a spring fed quarry with a couple of boats and planes that have been sunk. They also have a huge metal shark that you can swim through.

Linda, it was interesting, but getting pretty ravaged by over fishing. The just drag nets along the bottom and haul everything up, keep what they want, destroy the rest. And when i was there, years ago, the fishermen killed every turtle they could get their hand on whether it was legal or not.

The contrast between the desert above and the fecundity below was pretty dramatic. I took Ricketts' "Journey to the Sea of Cortez" with me, and read his entries for the places I dived, which was pretty fun.

Hey, I forgot Wreck Alley (3 times). Brad, when have you dove there? We did the Yukon it right after they sank it, and then a couple years after, it's amazing what is growing on the Yukon!

Oh Wait, I forgot, the Yukon and Wreck Alley is a myth, right CB?....lol...

Have you dove Lake Pleasant? how is it? I've thought about bringing our gear over sometime when we visit the kids and checking it out...just for the experience.

Hey Cynde, we dove Wreck Alley in January of this year and are hoping to get back there this summer.

Lake Pleasant is not bad for a local lake site. The best time of year is probably March, April and early May when they are letting in more water. You get better visibility during that time.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By Barbara "CB" Gibson* (Extraordinary BonaireTalker - Post #1887) on Thursday, May 29, 2008 - 4:46 pm:     Edit PostPrint Post

Yes, Brad, Wreck Alley is a myth. It doesn't exist. No boats go to it. You didn't dive there.

Actually it's a place where I am sure to get skunked...either big seas or I can't get a boat to take me there. They're all getting their nails done, or they don't want to get the tank holders dirty or something....sheesh.

Bette...your list....I don't know what to do with you.....

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By Boat Chick************** (Supreme BonaireTalker - Post #5354) on Thursday, May 29, 2008 - 4:47 pm:     Edit PostPrint Post

If you go this summer, give us a shout, we are just an hour north of SD, and would love to dive it again. We go with the Lois Ann, what boat do you go on?

Oh wait, CB is right, Wreck Alley is a myth. She's right, no boats want to go there, or they are getting their hair and nails done and don't have the time. I haven't really been there either, since it's a myth.

Looks like I've missed the LP window, maybe next year, that, and I refuse to go to AZ in the summer, I don't do well with the heat.

I think Bette wins:-)

This is a pretty new operation that looks nice. They're the ones that were going to take us, with Martin, last year, but they had Coast Guard inspection to get their Big Boy rating that day...

LOVE the Lois Ann, small boat, the owner bought it from the previous owner a few years ago. Top notch operation and they are VERY safety conscious (however you spell that)...lol!

Quick Yukon story. One of the times we went, everyone was gearing up, it was April [READ COLD WATER] and this cute little gal was gearing up, she had on a 1mm suit, and a lycra hood. I thought...wow...this chick must really be tough. Her hood wasn't even tucked into her wetsuit. Her buddy goes out the gait, and then she goes. The DM who was standing at the gait (fully clothed, as we all know that DMs in So Cal never go in the water) jumped in right after her...we were like WTF???? The you hear him cussing and yelling as he was dragging her back to the swim step. Seems her inflator hose was not hooked up and when she hit the water, she dropped like an anchor. When she got on the boat, her eyes were as big as watermellons....I don't think she had too many dives under her belt. Needless to say she didn't dive.

Michael got sick one time as well, so the second dive I was buddyless, and these "yahoo's" said I could go with them, but they were penetrating, and I could just "watch their bubbles."...uh...no thank you. The DM (who is now the owner) looks at me like "pass"...I did. These guys went into deco, and when they got out they were bragging about how far in the red in deco they were, and that they were digging holes in the bottom to get their computers to register more than 100feet....idiots.

CB, I have some friends that go out on the Humbolt. I was thinking that would be who we went with next time.

I have a Yukon story too, of my own ignorance. Let's just say, always check your dive computer settings...every dive.
