Early Saturday morning Terry and I took off for Pompano Beach, FL for some much needed diving. We live in Florida and have not gone diving since last October. Life gets in the ways sometimes. Anyway, five hours later we’re there and ready to dive with South Florida Diving Headquarters. They have a nice big pontoon (cattle) boat, and run a smooth operation.
So, this is the afternoon boat and half of the customers are snorklers and the first dive is on a reef called the Nursery. The weather was sunny with a little breeze. The drift dive was nice and uneventful for the divers and the snorkelers did their own thing. Since this is my first dive with my new gear I don’t take my little film camera. I wanted to get the weighting thing down first. The second dive is on a wreck called the Copenhagen and I took my old point & shoot film camera. copen plaque This wreck/boat was blown to bits yeas ago and parts are scattered everywhere, so it made great hiding places for the fish. anchor copen angel on copen scorpion sgt majors Great dive on the wreck, and then we drifted for a while. When we popped up to be picked up we found ourselves in the middle of a squall with thunder and lightening. Our dive boat and dive masters were really on top of it and pulled us out quickly. It was raining so hard I have no idea how they found the remaining four groups of divers. I won’t forget that dive soon.
Thank goodness we had good weather for our Sunday morning dives. We did a wreck dive terry on tracey nudi busyand a drift dive over a reef I think is called Light House Reef. terry w flag angleThere were hundreds of barrel sponges, French and Gray Angel fish, butterfly fish, Kissy fish, Satchmo and other usual suspects. I spotted two puffers resting in the shallow of one sponge, a big black basket star kind of balled up and clinging to the inside of another barrel sponge, and a good sized mora eel.

Hey, you don't have to wash the salt off your gear that way. Just throw a plastic shark in your pool. :-)

Actually I do have the wash the salt off - sort of. We use salt for our chlorination instead of chlorine. But it's not so bad...and I used to have a plastic shark that swam around but it seems my dogs liked it more.

Great memories! Were there years ago; we drove down from VA. Yes, I was younger and crazier to have done that!!! A friend had a home there. We shacked up and dove while there. Most fun was diving from shore. We were bug hunting LOL! Those lobstah's were yummy.

One dive Rob and I saw the largest lobstah....ever! He tried to wrap his legs around me after I tickled him with the stick. He came out like, UM, you wanna piece of me?!?! LOL I backed off and let him be; he would have been a record for sure but he skeered both Rob and I :-)

I dove FLA last summer, but it was in Key Largo. I saw the largest fish I have ever seen underwater. I have never seen a whaleshark, but we did see a Goliath Grouper (Jewfish) that had to easily been in the 400 pound range. It was an incredible sight, as he also snapped at a fairly large cuda that got a little bit too close to him.

Jim, Those Goliath are so cool. I saw my first one on the east coast of FL on maybe my 10th dive. I was clearing my ears and looking around to find my hubby, looked down and there was one around 40' below me. Good thing he moved 'cause I was a newby diver and thought it would be cool to ride it like a horse. Really I wouldn't have done it but I was thinking about it. :-)
