Sue and I recently returned from a dive trip to St. Croix.

Pictures are available at: http://homepage.mac.com/j.ciurczak/PhotoAlbum31.html

The trip was good and the diving was fine, but I could not help comparing the reefs to Bonaire.
St. Croix is not a protected Marine park environment, except for Buck Island, where they only snorkel.

The reefs are in fair shape and the walls are dramatic, but the coral is not as lush or abundant as in Bonaire.
We should keep in mind how lucky we are to be able to dive the beautiful reefs of Bonaire and strive to keep them in that condition for as long as we can.

Well we do owe lots to Capt Don for pushing the strong message of preservation & conservation on Bonaire all those years ago. Personally I have a lot of fond memories of St C & must have easily made 500 dives off the Cane Bay wall. The Fredericksted pier was my first night dive (many years ago), and how can you forget that!

Sue & John, Great pictures! If you're ever in that area again, go to St. John's in stead. There is a huge preserve on the island. The Rockefellers bought most of the island and turned in into a preserve. Today 2/3 of the island is a preserve. I don't know about the reefs being preserve and we only did a few dives around the main town in Cruz Bay - the tail end of a hurricane up in Bermuda were being felt in St. John's so the boats we're going out.

This is the fellow we were visiting there. Boy did I have camera envy following him around. http://www.stevesimonsen.com/
Steve and my husband, Terry, hung out together in Florida WAY back in high school.
