Slightly off topic, and I apologize in advance if any offense is taken. My wife and I are relocating to the Florida Keys soon, leaving New England weather behind finally(!) and we will be buying a boat for diving the local reefs and wrecks. Any thoughts or recommendations as to size, manufacturer, sources of specific dive boat info? I'd love to get into a big old Hatteras that we could cruise to Bonaire on, but I suspect a twenty something Grady White or Sea Ray is more in the budget.
Thanks

Scott, congratulations on the move. I've also moved your thread to CC where it is more appropriate.

My husband is a marine surveyor, he might be able to help with your choices (free of charge...lol). you can contact him through his website at www.socalsurveys.com.

This is a typical set up for the Keys ... 36' - 42' - a nice cabin with head, to get out of the rain storms that can come out of nowhere - a nice Bimini top to shield you from the sun ....

dive boat

Here's how to finance your dream boat: Take BT's out for dives and take us cheaper than the dive operators. :-)

Hey hey! You've got a deal!

Which part of the Keys are you moving to?
Also, congrats on living the dream. :-)

Come to think of it, if I ever win the lottery and move to Key Largo and buy a boat, I'm gonna name her the Dreamboat. :-)

My vote is for a nice Boston whaler; specifically the 245 Conquest which I've got my eye on!

As a former Connecticut Yankee - Welcome to Florida!

Since I spent my first 25 years in CT - and my last 29 years in FL - with time in between in San Diego and Honolulu - (Navy wife) - I guess I'm a Floridian now. (So why do I still consider CT "home"?)

We have our Bonaire park pass tags!

I have a 21' privateer here in NY that would be perfect for the Keys. You should be able to find one in the keys for sale in the 21' to 24' range.I have a 200 hp hpdi yamaha on it it with 6 divers on board gets on a plane easily.I plan on taking it south when we retire and trailer it around the keys.

I wouldn't go out to the reefs in a 21 ft. boat with 6 divers and 12 tanks ... nope ! Afternoon winds can whip up 6 - 8 foot swells .... been there!

privateer boats are very sturdy and heavy with thick fiberglass hulls.Normally I would say the same thing as you as 21' too small.I have had it off shore here and the conditions here are usually not as nice as in south Fla.Just choose your days.
