Well Hello - I feel bad that I have abandoned you guys (mostly lurking when I can) but I need your advise/suggestions because I am scared!!

A few months back I had posted that my blood pressure was high - it is continuing to be up and down even though the doctor gave a prescription I did not buy it. I though I could get it down with just doing different things but it sure has not. I am very scare because high blood pressure runs in the family/hypertension but being stubborn and don't want to take anything. I might stress but.... I have realize that I have to take the medicine that the doc prescribed.

Is any BTer taking BP pressure? You can either answer here or send me a private email.

I don't like all the reactions/negativity that you read about the medicine - I already bought it.

I needed to speak with someone and who else but this big group of good friends. Thank you!

SSG, listen to your doctor and take the medicine. I don't take it, but by what I have been told by friends who have, and from what I have read, sometimes it takes a little while to find the right script, and dose.

PM me if you need any info on the drug, you know what i do for a living...hugs...

elvira..High blood pressure is very serious. It can cause you to have a stroke. It can give you kidney problems..including permanently damaging them. Some times a person is able to control Hypertension with diet and exercise but if not it is very important to take something for it. You may have to try a couple different types of meds before you get the one that works for you. If you eat right and exercise, the medication may be able to be kept to a minimum....please take the girl's advise and follow your physicians instructions. It will be extremely detrimental to your health if you ignore the HTN...I will also be happy to help any way I can.PM me also if you think there is something I can do..goodluck and hang in there!

Elvira--I've been taking BP meds for years. I'm a young 53, in great shape, but my BP is just a bit high. TAKE THE MEDS!! Hypertension is the silent killer. While you're taking the meds, start exercising more...eat healthy...think positive. You may, at some point, no longer need them. No side effects for me. Go for it! Feel free to e-mail me for more info.

SSG, on the side effects, they have to list them, but it does NOT mean you will experience them, like Cathy.

Elvira, don't worry. I work for a doctor..if you trust your doctor and take you medicine as directed and are being monitored, you'll be just fine...my BP is ok and I'm not on meds, but I know plenty of people who have been on them for years and years with no problems at all.

I've been on BP meds since I was 21. That was 35 years ago I started. I continue to have normal blood pressure, BECAUSE OF THE MEDS. It's imperative you take the medicine. It will save your life. It's just a simple water pill to help aliviate the pressure in your blood vessels. Don't use salt and don't use excessive caffine and that will help. Take the meds.

I've been on BP med for several years. My MD is a diver so he keeps me informed and checked out. No one likes the idea of taking a pill regularly...just do it. We want you here and diving and posting for a long time to come.

My maternal family side all has high blood pressure, and I lost my grandmother way too early because she didn't take medication. Even living well, I've got it too, so I gobble that little pill down, pretend it's just another vitamin, and never think about it twice. Side effects are minimal to nonexistent....

I'm with Eileen - big hugs to you Elvira. Look at EVERYTHING in your life too and try to eliminate any extra stress. But most importantly - take the pill. I had to for a little while but no longer need to take anything...except my Flintstones, Tums and B12.

SSG, Cynde is correct, it can take time to find the right mix for you. My BP is all over the place at times. I think your Doc will advise you as to the right path for you.

Vira, Please take the meds.

Remember just last month my son, Josh, 30 yrs old, had stopped taking his BP meds for 3 months and wound up in the hospital for 3 days with all kinds of symptoms, and no clear diagnosis. And John takes 3 different BP meds, and tried several combinations until they found something that works. And they are both over weight and in stressful jobs, so need to continue taking the meds.

When people talk about controlling the disease through diet and exercise, they are usually overweight to begin with, and dropping the weight and eating right does the job. But that is not you! You are already a tiny gal, so this is just something in your genetic makeup and family history that you'll have to accept. I also hate having to rely on daily meds to control circumstances in my life, but I take two and just realize that that's just what I have to do. (I hear tell that getting older is not for wusses! :-) )

You know we're here for you, just as you've been here for any of us. You are one of the most delightful people I've met, so we want you healthy and with us a long time! Love from me.... and John too!

I take some, made a big difference.

You mentioned "I don't like all the reactions/negativity that you read about the medicine". Those potential reactions can be considered a part of the 'costs' involved in a cost benefit analysis. Keep in mind, as mentioned above, there are many varieties of the meds available, some trial and error may be needed to reduce the likelyhood of those adverse reactions.

Now take a look at the benefits of taking the meds.

Hold out your hands at arms length, the possible costs in one hand, the benefits in the other. Rraise and lower your hands a few times to get the feel. I'm betting you will find the benefits outweigh the potential costs.

They did for me.

Vira, you know mine gets borderline sometimes, like 130's over 80's, so my doc makes me take that pill, too because of my heredity - (well, a sister with a heart attack and 2 strokes, dad w/5 heart attacks and a stroke...grandfather, etc.). I don't like it either, but I take it. I have no side effects that I could identify.

I thought once I was off the birth control pill I'd never have to take a pill a day ever again. lol Short lived freedom. Now I take allergy meds, too, so that's 4 pills a day right now - plus eye drops and nasal spray. But I feel good!

You will, too. Just taking the worry off your mind about it. (((((hugs)))))

Just as Gail said... you are one of the most caring people I know. This world needs you around for a lot longer. Please take care and try not to worry.

Count me in, too, Elvira....been on BP Rx since 1990. Runs in my family. Even my skinny Mom had HTN and was on Rx's for most of her life.

Don't be afraid and don't be stubborn...it's not worth risking your health or your life.

Let us know how you are coming along with the adjustment to your new meds, OK? Hugs!! Carole

The creepy thing about high blood pressure, Elvira, is that you feel just fine for the most part. Same with taking the drugs: you feel about the same. I think that's part of why people don't want to take them..."I feel fine and I don't want to be saddled with medication the rest of my life."

Take your medicine, Ms. E!
