I was tootling around a Sharper Image store yesterday, cultivating needs I never even knew I had, and I saw a turntable that claimed to plug into my computer with a usb port and allow me to store my vinyl collection as mp3 files. It was $200. at Sharper Image, so there must be a cheaper one out there. Do you guys know if these devices will do a decent job? I don't even care if I get the hiss and pop as long as I can store my music.

I keep asking sound engineers about this, but all the ones I know actually prefer to listen to their collections on vinyl...they claim they get tired of the digital sound by the end of the work day...

CB, $200.00 is a fair price. The new stuff on the market can cost as much as a car.
On a good / high end system, vinyl is, has a wider sound stage, more live feeling.

Invest in a good record cleaner.

But, you get what you pay for with a turntable.

Oh, yeah, Jerry...two hundred bucks is pretty reasonable, especially considering what these cost just a year ago. It's just that Sharper Image always costs LOTS, and I don't know what to look for in these devices.

I still have an actual turntable and use it, but I can't carry some music with me in that format, obviously, and can't afford to rebuy all that music, even if it's available, so, I need to get it stored somehow.

I bet you have a turntable too, Dude...

Hey, what are you doing here on a Monday? Go cook for Saint Louise!

Barbara
I saw them a few weeks ago in Costco, much cheaper than that.
I just Googled it. Numark TTUSB from Amazon $133.24. Great, except all our vinyl went in the trash years ago.

I'm doing a chicken for the bride, she's playing tennis tonight.

I do have a turntable, playing Tony Bennett & K.D. Lang.

Truth be told the "pop's do get to me sometimes.
My CD player took me two years to get, trading, saveing, getting on a list. I do love my CD player. It's a Electrocompaniet EMC-a 1-up.

Not found at K-Mart, YET!

Have to base the bird, will be back.

Cool, Micky...I'll look there. Good old Google...why didn't I think of that. Because I have you guys, that's why!

When I get something, I'll let you all know how it goes. Meanwhile, all suggestions are accepted gratefully!

one can do it the hard way (without really buying anything)

good luck - they do sound good:-)

You're right, but at that time you literally could not give them away. Nobody would take them even for nothing.

Wow, Bob! I just recorded my first tune without a disc, etc. Simple feat for most but a giant step forward for me! LOL.

I have LP's and 78's and 45's from crank victrola days to the 1930's thru 1980's on vinyl and then CD's after that. I never let go of my parents outrageous LP collection nor my brothers (6 years my senior) nor my own. Just couldn't do it. Now I have to figure out how to transfer all of this outrageous material onto a new format.

The LP covers/sleeves are where the money is today. Artwork. I have held onto my folks records since Mom passed away in 1-01. Original Sinatra, Dorsey's, Goodman and so much more. Even have an original Elvis LP from 1954 or so...cover and all.

So, thanks, Bob for letting me start with Bob Dylan...great selection, too! cb

RosAnne, AM NOT!!! I'm just trying to stay enough ahead of the dinosaur grave yard to avoid becoming petroleum.

Bob, I didn't understand a word you said, but when OUR family geek gets home, I'll try to get him to explain. My , I live with the king of geeks and i can't get him to sit down with me and explain this stuff.

I believe I just heard that Sharper Image was declaring bankruptcy....

Go for it CB, if nothing else you'll have good, portable backup of your music collection. I've transferred almost all of my music to my office computer so that I have it both places. I don't know how people choose what type of music to bring along without knowing how the day will go :-) That and using www.pandora.com have saved more than a few days for me!

The most important thing when buying a USB turntable is the stylus (needle). That makes or breaks the recording. Research! The bit rate should be at least 256 or your wasting your time. I've noticed in my recent posts that I seem to a thread breaker, meaning that no one responds after me. Am I that boring?

Thanks, Bruce. that's just the kind of thing I was looking for.

I used to pop in on a thread and feel really bad when it immediately went dead. Then I realized it was just lunch hour on the east coast.

Then I realized they hated me.

Oh, Jerry, I like a little of everything. Right now I'm stuck on Susannah McCorkle. And Dengue Fever, even if I only understand every 5th piece.

And Butch Thompson. And Bela Fleck. And John Lurie.

Ok, I'll stop..

Bruce, I used to think it was "me"...LOL~! I guess we all have experienced the same thing! LOL.

Does Stanton still make a stylus? It has been decades (literally) since I picked up a great stylus for the old turntable.

Guess I need to go out and determine which equipment I need to start the transfer process from vinyl to PC.

All input is welcome! cb

Bela Fleck and the Flectones are always playing in concert here in Morristown, NJ at the Community Theatre. Guess I need to get my buns over there to check them out!

PS I also have to transfer tons of VHS to DVD, etc...just another monumental project for that "spare time" I hope to have some day if I can ever retire! LOL. cb

Carol, the Flecktones come here maybe twice a year if I'm lucky, so I envy you!

When I get this gizmo and try it out, I'll let you know how it goes. I'm afraid that using the word "gizmo" just aged me.

I'm also trying to figure out the VHS/DVD thing. They're not that expensive, but they all seem counterintuitive to use. I'm hoping it's not just me..

Carole, you can use your turntable and amp. You just have to get RCA cables that will convert to 1/8 inch for your stereo sound card. Then just pick up the software that will allow you to convert analog to WMA or MP3. I'm going the USB route and just ordered an Ion ITTUSB05 with software from Amazon. $95 shipped and it has great reviews. Our albums are analog and we still hear the pops and hisses that the record has. The software can cancel some of this but don't expect too much. They will never sound like a CD. I do not want to buy a few hundred cd's to replace my vinyl, so this is the way for me to go. Listening to Bela now, the bluegrass sessions. Peace!

Bruce, I had looked at that one on Amazon but just didn't know if it was any good, so thanks for the recommendation.

Bela rocks, doesn't he? With the Flecktones or by himself...

Thanks, Bruce. I can't tell if this is the hardware and the software, or what, and I can't find a place on the site that tells me exactly. You're turning into our tech guru. You can lead all the dinosaurs into the light?

You love Amazon, don't you?

Gotta tell you that I've been back filling the albums that I converted from vinyl with downloaded ITunes stuff. The pops and crackles on my old vinyl drive me nuts. Kind of a live and learn education for me. The Pink Floyd download sounds much better then the album I converted. Lesson learned, spend a hundred on a USB turntable or a hundred on downloads. At my age, I thought I knew everything. What a rectum!
