Pepto Bismal to the rescue!

I know what Pepto Bismal is really for. But it has some chemical in it that soothes your insides, no?

I am being attacked by my immune system, not fully diagnosed yet, but the symptoms showed up about seven weeks ago in the form of hacking cough, and hives, UGH!!!

Little red mosquito bite-looking bumps grow into horribly itchy welts that covered me, from scalp to the bottoms of my feet, wow. I have been MISERABLE!! Oh, poor me. There was some delay before I made it to see my doctor of twenty years.

Finally, a friend asked around and came back with the suggestion of Pepto Bismal, and it works!! I slather it on with a one inch cheapie brush from the hardware store.

The usual recommendation is Calamine lotion. I used gallons of that stuff in my childhood, even tho' it didn't seem to work. And it takes hours and hours to dry. Pepto Bismal just takes a little while to dry.

Pepto Bismal might work for no-see-ums, bad ractions to mosquito bits, poison ivy/poison oak, and maybe other temporary skin rashes. Jelly stings, and Thimble Jelly welts, UGH!!!

And you get lots of sympathy because the dried up electric pink really makes you look awful! haha, especially on the face!

And other itchies: Long ago I found a GREAT way to immunize onesself against Poison Ivy: eat some! That's what any immunisation is, no?. When the leaves just start growing in the spring, and they're 1/4 to 1/2 of an inch long, bright red and shiny, get the middle part of a slice of Wonderbread, and wrap one tiny leaf in it, squishiing it into a 'pill' so that none of the leaf shows. Swallow whole, then go wash with lots of soap to remove any residual poison from your skin. You're OK if you can wash off the chemical, whatever it is, within twenty minutes of touching poison ivy.

Do this every day for five days. I didn't have any trouble with PI after that, all summer.

I hope these suggestions help someone. Itching is a terrible thing.

Molamola

Hi Mola,
I love your idea for the Pepto and will use it but EATING PI I think you are asking for problems especially if someone is DEATHLY allergic!! I think this is poor advice at best..
I have found that even after 20 minutes if you wash with laundry soap{brown soap,Fels Naptha} then you will wash all the oils off your body.. My husband is always working in the garden and before he comes into the house in the summer he showers outside with brown soap. he hasn't had a bad case of PI in years and he was really allergic... used to need steroids to get over the rash.. BROWN SOAP YES, EATING NO!!!

Hey folks, self immunization in the manner Melissa mentioned is an accepted practice by some individuals. See: http://www.wwmag.net/pivy.htm

Also, if you read to the bottom you will notice that the article states a person may also be "immunized" by their physician.

I goofed! I forgot the bad side of health.

I AM NOT A MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL. THE SUGGESTIONS ABOVE ARE THAT ONLY, SUGGESTIONS TO CONSIDER AND NOT MEDICAL ADVICE NOT A MEDICAL PROCOTOL.

I eat 'B' vitamin complex, and one clove of garlic raw like a pill every night and mosquitoes do not bite me. THAT IS NOT MEDICAL ADVICE!!! It's jut what I do.

I would delete this post IF I COULD!!!!!!!!!!!

Mm---- Don't sue me.

no problemo Mola. two sides to every story and Tom googled a backup for ya . Might not make it right in some peoples eyes but that is their choice. I still wouldn't do that I don't care what the internet says..I guess if my doctor told me to do it I would for health reasons...

M., I am now considering contacting my primary care physician (also a neighbor) to see about immunization. One disadvantage to living where I do is the poison ivy.

Thanks, T

Called primary care physician waiting on response. In the meantime I have been researching reputable sites without reading what "I wanted to read", i.e., immunization possibility.

A lot of medical sites echo what I just found on webmd:

"A new barrier cream called Ivy Block or bentoquantam 5% can be applied to the skin prior to exposure and will form a protective layer on top of the skin. The drug Trental may decrease the rash slightly, but needs to be taken before exposure to the plants. Immunization for poison ivy, oak or sumac is not available at this time."

Seems like prevention is still the best medicine.
