Need ideas here folks. Since I am unfortunately the de facto IT Manager guy for Company and extended family all equipment passes through my under fouton storage area. Seems I had to replace a few laptops this month ( Dad and Joey)and while rooting and swapping things around I came up with an older laptop that needs a new home.
I thought I would fire it up this weekend and give it a check up. If it turns out to be a solid machine...who could use it on BON.
It is probably running WIN98 and has Office 2000. So not a workhorse for the new stuff but a good machine for what? Kids, Shelters, Park?

I have disabled clients that would love them, if you really want to give them away.

The people I deal with are so needy, but are trying so hard, so they would be appreciated, greatly.

I work for Vocational Rehabilitation in Tampa, FL. We could take a donation as a state agency, and I also could as a private person. And could make sure they were put to good use. By making people tax paying citizens by helping them find work. These days, you need a computer for that, many times. I AM the email address for many clients because they don't have computers. But we manage.

I could put them to good use with clients. There are other worthy causes, but my maiden name IS Worthy. :-)

Let me know.

Wally, is BON where you would prefer to donate it?
I wonder if the Hoppner kids could have a need for it? Not sure if they have internet access or are savy in computer skills. Maybe Michael at C&B knows where it's most needed.

Otherwise, sounds like Kathy can put them to good use.

I was wondering about the Hoppner kids. What sparked the thought was I remembered a few years back when the Park Service was looking for an old beater laptop to use in the truck on surveys.
I will fire the thing up this AM and see what it can and can't do.
Hi Kathy...there are plenty of local uses here as well...just thinking about BON while looking out the window at bare trees.
Just pulled the paperwork and it is a 2000 model with a whopping 6G drive and a massive 32M ram running a P3-450. I think my dive computer has more ponies then this thing. Might be wasting our time here.

Wally, shoot Jake an email. He would know if any of the non-profits on Bonaire could use one. Also, Michael Gaynor is involved with some of the needy orgs, and he might also know of someone who needs one.

Heck, there are dozens of places on Bonaire that would love to have it. Jake will certainly find a good home.

Wally,

Your machine could certainly run XP with some more RAM. It's about the age where max RAM might be 128 or 256. It will take about 3 gig to load XP,all the updates, and the usual additional software. I still use a P2-300 for travel, it's reasonably quick on a free hotel or airport network. And not much of a problem if broken or stolen. I'm taking it to India next week.

I agree Jim...I was looking down on the little guy, but I have been playing with it this morning and it's not a bad little machine. The original specs are

Gateway SOLO 2150 LS 1.5, Hitachi 6-GB 9.5MM Hard Disk Drive, 64MB SL+PC100 SDRAM R0 MEM, ActionTec Modem Mini-PCI Card
CDR 10/24X

Number of Memory Slots on Board: 1 (1 bank of 1)Maximum Amount / Type of RAM that can be Installed: 288MB SDRAM, PC133

Looks like it uses is 140 pin SODIMM. That's a shame as I found a good 256 MB stick in my parts box but it's 200 pin. I will check with my neighbor to see if he has an old 140 pin stick in his parts bin.
