Well, Jerry, go on a vacation! :-) Sometimes we BT'ers, if we don't have real vacations in the near future, we go visit each other. Anyone close to you for a BT mini?

I've impatiently waiting for the grandchildren to arrive!!! (or else I'd play)

:-)

My excitement will have to be saved until morning. wah They left way late, and will not be here until the middle of the night. Instead of leaving at 6:30, they left at noon. sigh I talked to the g'kids and told them to please sleep while the parents are driving. They have a dvd movie player and 3 movies, but I hope they will fall asleep. Larry and I used to do the trip in 9 hours. But with 5 kids, it's more like 10.5. Shame it's an hour and 15 min by plane.

I agree that it is slow. I was having a real hard time concentrating at work today and kept coming on here to look at the latest and greatest and there wasn't much. WAAAA. Well maybe something this weekend.

night all

Well we had some fun last night the electronic dog fence got hit by lightning. This is whats left of the transmitter.

Fence1

This where the cover ended up.

This whats left of the power supply.

Supply

Now for the punch line. This where I was standing when it hit.

Cecil

Seconds before I had moved to the other side of the garage due to the fence. I thought it might get hit. When it hit I was actually watching the box, the wires briefly glowed orange before the white flash as they vaporized.

Was not Cynde talking about how you never know whens it your time, that was way way to close to my time.

Hey Cecil --
Glad you're okay.
Here in Astoria we've had green flames shooting out of our manhole covers. The peak demand for electricity during our recent heatwave overheated the wires, some of which caught fire. The green color, I am told, is the color of copper burning.
Our home is okay, I know at least a dozen folks both north and south of me who have not had power in their homes since last Monday.
We are conserving power so as to not overheat the remaining powerlines.
Mare

Wow Cecil...so glad you escaped. If you were a cat, I would say you just used up a life there. Ok, so no more going outside when there are storms. Alright? Just sit on your couch with a good book and a glass of wine and don't even think about going into your garage. :-)

Come on Ray! You can do it.

Uh...Cecil, yea, I was not referring to you! WOW...did the hair on your arms and the back of your neck stand up? Years ago I was in the mountains at my Uncle's house. Major lightening storm. A tree just outside his house got it. The TV blew, and you could feel the residual electricity go through your body. Every hair was on end...really weird feeling.

Thank goodness you moved to the other side of the garage...way too close a call buddy!

Dang Cecil! Definitely NOT an experience anyone needs to have. I'm with Tribs, no more hanging in the garage during lightening storms :-)
Thanks for sharing though - it is amazing the power of electricity.

Holy cow Cecil... that was close. Glad you are ok, that's pretty amazing!

Isn't it a guy thing though to be out in the garage watching storms? My dad always did that during tornados. We'd be in the basement and he was outside watching.

Cecil, you disappoint me. No camera, and you KNEW it was gonna happen.

http://www.kencove.com/elecs.htm a link to prevent that happening again.

Trust your gut, and get that snap.

A few more notes about this incident. Right after it happened Sue came running out in the garage saying, we've been hit. I said yep and showed her the damage. There were then some frantic moments making sure the house was not on fire. Nothing like running around the house during a lightning storm. It was like an artillery barrage. No fires and I still have not found where it hit.

Seb that will not help, the charge came back up the buried wire though the transmitter and back to its power supply. From there it appears to have gone to ground through the house electrical panel. No other things were effected, most stuff was off.

Since that time I have been trying to read peoples minds or have visions of future events, no luck. My faith in Hollywood has taken another downturn.

Whoops, I was thinking electric fence, I missed the salient word DOG! Why on earth I thought you would have an electric fence, I have no idea, possibly my city worldview just has you pegged as rural, keeping varmits out of the garden.
