Rusty and Linda, hope you have a great birthday. Stay warm and don't slip on the ice.

I'm bummed this morning, still having trouble with the computer. This Photoshop problem is still kicking my butt. I can't resize or sharpen both of which are pretty critical.

The other problems are still no progress on the job front and my car is having a problem. My heater fan only works in high and not on the other speeds. Good thing I'm an electrical engineer which has not helped even a little. You would think it's a fuse, NOT. Stinking Japanese engineers, there are fuses scattered all around this car and none of them are for the fan.

Enough of my problems, we had a great time at the Bett Midler show on Tuesday. She is a great entertainer and a hoot. Here's some pictures I managed to get (and through Photoshop, it only took three re-boots to get these).

mer

Cecil, Bette is my hero. She is looking good! Did she do the mermaid in a wheelchair thing? LOL

? Camera God - what can you tell me about digital cameras with telephoto? My Olympus macro is so wonderful but the 10x (really 3x optical and blah blah blah) zoom/telephoto really doesn't pull things in much. It's great for cropping scenery shots and far mountains but not for taking bird pix in a tree over there. Are they affordable yet?

scanner I decided to take today off from working on my gravestone book and play. Dadz gave me a scanner a couple years ago but it was USB so I couldn't use it til I got my PC back from the dox last month.

hopping

So I decided my birthday was a good day to hippity hop down memory lane and pulled out a box of unorganized photos I haven't looked at in a decade or more. I didn't even know this photo existed - it was an 8x10 tucked in behind some of my parents' wedding pictures in an album.

Easter... don't look, Ethel!

Yes, Bett did a long section as a mermaid. "Fin on Broadway", very funny stuff.

Rusty, the short answer is NO. They make 10x digital but for wildlife that's not enough, certainely better than 3x. The only way to do that properly is to get a digital SLR and get a long lens. Big bucks, the camera is over a grand. Thats bad enough but to then take it under water will triple the price. What I keep meaning to do is use my old 35mm with a 500 mm lens.

Maybe down the road they will come down in price.

The other problem I forgot earlier is my camera is screwing up again. It's sticking in night mode again, it's always something.

Ain't there just something about a chick in cowboy boots, Jos! Yee-haw! :-)

duh Cecil - but a 10x (say, one o the new Canons) would it be three times more zoomy than my 10x Olympus - (which ishave digital/half optical). Am I making sense? I don't really get the digital/optical thing yet.

I hear ya about the one thing after another. The roof is done ($$$$$$$), my car is dead for the time being, the PC didn't wipe us out but it wasn't a cheap fix. Hope I don't have go get a real job.

Birthday Girl... Here is the 'skinny' from the know-it-all (NOT!!!)

An optical zoom uses lens optics to bring subjects closer...as in a 500mm telephote lens used on a 35mm camers.

A digital zoom sounds really new tech, but it was a digital video invention. Digital zoom does not really zoom as an optical lens.

It simulates optical zooming by cropping a portion of image you see in the viewfinder and enlarges the image you see. This bit of trickery results in a loss of image res.

Go for a higher optical zoom.

fish

Fish farting may not just be hot air... your science dollars at work!

NewScientist.com news service

Biologists have linked a mysterious, underwater farting sound to bubbles coming out of a herring's anus. No fish had been known to emit sound from its anus nor to be capable of producing such a high-pitched noise.

"It sounds just like a high-pitched raspberry," says Ben Wilson of the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. Wilson and his colleagues cannot be sure why herring make this sound, but initial research suggests that it might explain the puzzle of how shoals keep together after dark.

Grunts and buzzes

Fish are known to call out to potential mates with low "grunts and buzzes", produced by wobbling a balloon of air called the swim bladder located in the abdomen. The swim bladder inflates and deflates to adjust the fish's buoyancy.

The biologists initially assumed that the swim bladder was also producing the high-pitched sound they had detected. But then they noticed that a stream of bubbles expelled from the fish's anus corresponded exactly with the timing of the noise. So a more likely cause was air escaping from the swim bladder through the anus.

It was at this point that the team named the noise Fast Repetitive Tick (FRT). But Wilson points that, unlike a human fart, the sounds are probably not caused by digestive gases because the number of sounds does not change when the fish are fed.
