Is it possible to just swim to Klein Bonaire (or do you always need a boat ride)? Are there any strong currents? I´m used to swimming long distances but am rather afraid of currents...

Things that occupy my mind while planning a Christmas (way to go!) trip to Bonaire...

Hi Irmgard,

I've heard of a man (65+) who swims to Klein Bonaire and back... So I guess it's possible, but you must be a die hard and recognizable for boats of course...

And, depending on the place you're leaving 'Big' Bonaire, it would be a longer and/or tougher swim.

Irmgard, I know people swim to klein and back, but you must be a good swimmer and I would only do it with someone who knows his way in the waters. I never tried it myself (too lazy I think :-) ), but it is possible.

Hi Kitty, all OK?? A small note on a personal base: De drempels naar de garage zijn verlaagd (eindelijk). Say Hi to Marc. Only a few months and we can finally visit your new place.

Personally, I would suggest going out on a Kayak, but if you are asking such a question, you are probably a much better swimmer than I am.

Hi Martin!

All is well here... Great place to live, really. Very busy at work, too... Busier and better than in Holland.
Marc's working on something else than bartending and waiting, so maybe he'll get another career soon (in another part of the organization like me). Keeping our fingers crossed.
I'll pass your regards on to Marc. And he will be pleased with the verlaagde drempels (although he doesn't use them anymore) :-)

He's Irish, so why don't you take him out to the Irish pubs in the city? :-)

Irmgard,

Swim Around Klein Bonaire.
Swimming to (and from) Klein Bonaire is relatively simple for an experienced open water swimmer. It is only a few kilometers, but there are currents, and more importantly boats and windsurfers.
If you like long and adventurous swims, I recommend swimming (with mask) around Klein Bonaire (without fins). It is about 12 km / 8 miles in total circumference. I wrote a more detailed report that is in the Bonaire Talk archives.
You can get a water taxi ride over in the morning and get picked up late afternoon. I suggest depositing water/food at a couple of accessible points (beaches).
This is simply a marvelous adventure covering some of the world's best and most diverse coral reefs. It takes a good swimmer 5 - 6 uuren.
Guaranteed to see lots of life and burn great images into your neurons. Deep blue water, colorful reefs, fish, turtles, blacktips (maybe), inverts. You can play the reruns again and again in your head (I do).
Best to go clockwise starting on the east side (Bonaire side).

Have fun.

Bud Gillan
