I know this isn't the accomodations site, but since you are probably the enthusiastic snorklers like we are - how about some advice on where to stay if snorkeling right from the beach (without a boat and we don't scuba dive) is our main priority? We used to go to Sunset Beach Hotel near the Sand Dollar and snorkel at Front Porch site off the beach, but the hotel is no longer. So where do we go now? Thanks! Jen

Jennifer -

We can speak only of experience at the Plaza.

Direct access to the water is quite easy and we have found the snorkeling directly in front of the hotel (covering a distance of perhaps 150 yards parallel to the beach) to be quite good.

There is evident damage to the coral from the 1999 hurricane, but when we were there in January of this year we saw more and a greater variety of sea life than we saw before the hurricane.

In addition, we also were pleased with the accommdations and service at the Plaza. There were still a few "Caribbean" or "Dutch" quirks to the service, but that only adds to the richness of the travel experience and reminds us that the island belongs to them, not us. If we wanted the same as home...

I'm sure others will add intelligence from other properties to give you enough information for an informed decision.

Regardless of where you stay, you know your snorkeling and Bonaire experience will be top notch.

Divi is great, right off the pier and beach at the hotel.(but I am a timeshare owner so I'm prejudice) Great for night snorkeling as well. There are many properties on the water, all of which have great snorkeling, a few kicks off the beach or jump off the dock!
