I'm reading a lot of positive comments regarding snorkeling at 1000 Steps. We were there two years ago and could not figure out where we could get back out easily. I remember it being a drift snorkel to the right. Can someone advise where and how far away it is to get back on shore from the steps?

Bob, When we snorkel 1000 Steps we usually walk along the shore as far to the south of the horseshoe as possible , snorkel a little farther south then turn towards the mooring , continue north as far as we feel comfortable depending on current and wave action then return in the shallows. For what it is worth 1000 steps is only an OK snorkel in my opinion but still one that we do. Enjoy, Gregg

Hi Gregg, Thanks for the info. We'll be at LBR for the first time on July 9th. Like I told Debbie, we wish we could have booked with you but I'm hoping we'll be happy at #27. Let me pick your brain for your top 5 snorkel sights. We've been to most of them but we don't really know what the effects of Omar was. Also, some BT'ers mentioned that there was good snorkeling just to the right of LBR's beach. Any comment?

Bob, When we were there in April, we found 1000 steps to be a good snorkel with our kids. Entry and exit was easy. Omar did do a lot of damage to the staghorn coral there, but there were plenty of fish. If you are going to Washington Slagbaai National Park, be sure to go to Wayaka II. IMHO it is the BEST snorkel you will have! Tons of life there. We were greeted by the dinner plate French Angels, who swam with us for most of our snorkel, huge midnight parrots (3 of them) along with a large variety of other parrots, margate, flamingo tongues and so many other things that I just am not remembering right now.

When you swim out towards the drop off, swim along the drop off and chances are you will have a close encounter with a turtle. Andrea 1&2 also are great foor spotting turtles.

1000 Steps late afternoon is a great snorkel, particularly heading south along the cliff wall. Right now the paired Loras (Bonaire endangered parrot) may be seen and heard. These are the birds with red and yellow feathers, along with the great green body. They are special. The late afternoon sun adds a lot of texture and 3D structure to the cliff.

Having problems with posting a picture Remco. It is weird the first time. Here's a turtle from Andrea II taken while snorkeling.

We found it very disapointing in March when we snorkelled there. All we saw was dead coral and we were a fair way out.Perhaps we were not in the right spot.
