Hi all,

New to posting but I have been lurking a long time here (used the site for our excellent trip back in August). Thanks for all the great advice! Just reading through the trip reports has helped us deal with the depression of *not* being in Bonaire!

Since I am a second year law student (and life is NOT fun), my partner and I have decided to reward ourselves with a trip to Bonaire in December. When we went in August, we had some troubles with mosquitos (if there is one little bugger alive, it'll find me and bite me repeatedly, probably while laughing and rubbing its little forelegs together). How's the mosquito situation in December? What are some general differences between August and September on Bonaire?

Thanks for any advice you can provide! Now I have the extra task of trying to concentrate on legal stuff for the next few months... Can't wait!

- Bunky

Welcome to Bonaire Bunky! Don't know why no one else has chimed in on this subject. I always go in Dec, but my first time 5 yrs ago was in July. July, was more humid, Dec weather is perfect but there may be a little rain. And rain is when the mosquito problem can be worse of course because of all the still water.

Now I'm someone that usually NEVER gets bitten by anything. But one year, I stayed at a friend's place on Bon which had some still puddles after a rain next to his place, and I left the window open. Had a screen on it, but oh man did I get BITTEN...and bad! Looked like I had chicken pox on my legs!

This past Dec was the first time I've ever brought 100% deet...MAN does that stuff work good! And you only need a very light spraying of it.

I'll be on Bon Dec 15-29 at Capt Don's Habitat for the first week and then Lion's Dive/Buddys for the second week. Maybe we'll meet up. Pic of me on my profile, I'm on the right.

Ummm....I meant welcome to Bonaire Talk...not Bonaire...because that would sound like I live there!

Thank you for responding, Mercy! I realized after I posted that there were some other discussions going on regarding weather in December and felt pretty foolish, so it was a relief to see someone respond to my post anyway.

I think I am just going to have to figure out how to rig a mosquito net over the bed where we are staying.... Duct tape should come in pretty handy.

Just got back from our first trip to Bonaire--loved every single minute. Thanks to lurking on this board, I brought with me some Cactus Juice and was given some 100% Deet to help deal with the little buggers. I had also used pyrethane (sp?) on some long sleeved shirts to wear at nite. I think it's not necessarily the mosquitos that are the biggest nuisance, but the no-see-ums. The 100% Deet worked 100% of the time. The Cactus juice worked when freshly applied. There was no problem with skeeters in the bungalow we rented from Capt. Don's, but I think they "bombed" the place just before we arrived.
Cheers! I'm going through withdrawal so enjoy for all of us stuck here!
