Just use a type of bug spray that works best for you. There are many out there, everyone here has their favorite. Some like Cactus Juice, some like Deet and others like Avon Skin so Soft. If you get bit, there are lots of home remedies talked about here on BT, don't remember exactly where now though, I think Benadryl works for the itch, and vaseline jelly maybe, cortisone cream is a favorite too.

For after being bitten we had good luck with plain white vinegar. Vinegar is also good to take along in your dive vehicle for application to any small cut immediately upon exiting the water.

We brought Deep Woods Off and had no problems. Only needed to apply at night, when dining outdoors. Other than that, no bites at all during the day. We traveled in mid-April and did not have a drop of rain the whole time. There is a strong relationship between the amount of rain and the mosquitos.

Our last trip was late Sept early Oct which is the beginning of the wet season. It rained almost every night but we had almost no problem with bites. But each to his own, others had lots of bites. Depends on your body chemistry. Use what works on you.

We always take clear nail polish for the no see ums. The little red marks on your legs or arms. We also use Deep woods off , works great for those buggers. :-)

When we see one of the little red marks getting bigger and start to itch, we put a dab of clear nail polish on the mark to "smother " them . The itching stops and the red marks go down. Works wonderfully ! :-)

I'll try it.
I'm allergic to the little bug bites.

Can we get nail polish and deet sprays through security... Newark/TSA? Maybe this should go in another thread, but it was so 'on-topic.'

Thanks,

Eric (only a few days until we might experience Iguana poop on our shoulders!)

Eric,
One can get both nail polish and deet sprays on Island.
Here are the Transportation Security Administration's guidelines for carry-on items.

I googled tsa and liquids for that link.

P.S. Is iguana poop on one's shoulder a good luck omen?

Only if the iguana put it there personally and it has to be on the left shoulder and it must be on the morning after a full moon.

I found the first trip to Bonaire, I was horribly bitten by what termed no see ums. I looked like I had measles or something. Each year I have returned the reaction has gotten much milder, though I still get bitten. But I don't care any longer, they stay small and don't each now.
