Okay, never been to Bonaire, but will be next month! I'm soooo excited about it. I've read great things. So, here's where I need some help.

We're cruising, so we only have a day in port and want to make the most out of a short visit. We like to snorkel and enjoy leasure beaches. So, would we be better off going over to Klein or sticking with Bonaire?? From what I've read, Bonaire doesn't have any sandy beach entry points. But, we want to have a great snorkel experience. What does everyone suggest for us?? If we go to Klein, where do we get the water taxi and what do they run?

One more question, I saw some postings somewhere are "tags" that are required. Know anything about that?? Or bad info.

I'm counting on all the experts on this board!!! Thank you!!

a leisurely day at the beach doesn't sound like Klein Bonaire to me. There are no facilities of any kind. If you go to Plaza Resort there is a beach and really nice snorkeling. I believe they charge $5 for using their chairs. Divi is also an alternative. You might want to consider the Woodwind if it fits your schedule. They do a great snorkeling trip and you can sun yourself on the deck of the Catamaran. If you do decide to take the water taxi you can get it in town, but be sure to bring water with you and use lots of sunscreen. Another alternative would be to contact Renee and arrange for a guided snorkeling tour but that would not meet your lie on the beach criteria. so many choices and yet there are no bad choices snorkeling in Bonaire.

Karen, thanks for your input. I didn't know that Klein had no facilities! Finding out the hard way, would not be good!! I did look at Renee's site, and it does sound rather interesting. Is it true that most of the entry points are rocky?? What about these "tags" I've been reading about? Are they necessary for a few hours of snorkeling?? Thanks so much for your help!!

Hi Lezlie,

Welcome to Bonaire Talk.

Here is the info about the Marine Park Tags that I copied from Info Bonaire

quote:

Bonaire National Marine Park

It is necessary for all who use the waters of the Bonaire National Marine Park to pay a Nature Fee of $10.00 per year ($25.00 for scuba divers). At the time of payment, you will receive a specially designed tag indicating your support for nature preservation and a receipt. Keep both, as they will also provide you with complimentary admission to Washington-Slagbaai National park throughout the year your tag is valid. Tags are available at all dive operations, hotels, resorts, windsurfing operations, sport fishing charter boats, sail/snorkel/water taxi operations, marinas, and other water sports operations on Bonaire.

Click around on the Info Bonaire website to get a feel of what you can do on Bonaire.

Mare

Lezlie - somehow I thought that the cruise ships arranged the park tags for you. You may want to check with them. But most certainly while there are rocky places to enter there a few (and really only a few) places to enter where if you use full fit fins you would be OK. The snorkelling is great everywhere. You could consider getting a ride up to Oil Slick Leap as well since that is either a climb down the ladder or a splash in from the rock and there is a little place not too far away that I believe serves lunch and snacks.

But no matter how it works out - I would make certain that you get somewhere and snorkel. It's a beautiful ocean and bottom topography. Enjoy yourself.
