Well, we're gearing up for our first trip to Bonaire in September and we're wondering if wearing a hood when snorkeling would help protect the back of our head/scalp from the sun? We've snorkeled in Hawaii and this was a problem, especially for my hubby who has thinning hair. Also I know fins have been discussed so I'll try and find the posts....we're thinking of Force Fins.

Thanks!

Van

Hi, Van! A thin hood would work great, but I always just use a "do-rag" on my head. They make special ones for divers if you want to get fancy, they are stretchy material. The plain cotton ones work well, too. Of course, this doesn't help the back of the neck, only the head.

Good luck and have a blast !!

I think the website is www.scubadorag.com but I'm not one hundred percent sure that's right. Some cool stuff though.

Hello Van,

The sun is INTENSE on Bonaire. My boyfriend's scalp and neck were burned on the first day. We found a hood for him at the Divi Flamingo dive shop. It worked well and was reasonably priced. It also protected his ears, another area that is exposed to the sun and is difficult to keep covered with sunscreen.

We both wear full length dive skins while snorkeling to protect our fair skin from the sun. When we arrive at a snorkel site and suit up, I always imagine that anyone watching would think we were going diving because of all the gear we put on (suits, boots and hoods)!. Sunburn can quickly ruin a vacation and we take no chances. When we went for a snorkel trip on the Woodwind, I felt a little better when I saw Dee put on a hood, suit and boots.

Enjoy Bonaire, but beware! It is addicting.

I have thin hair and Eva burns easily so for diving we both wear do rags and snorkling I wear the same and Eva wears a very thin hood beanie thing that covers her ears. Full skins for snorkling as well.
My lips were burnt first morning first dive. It is intense sun at this latitude.

Another good source for diving scarves is www.dee-rags.com.
