Our last trip to Bonaire was a year after the big hurricane when the shallows were mostly rubble. What spots are the most recovered so that a snorkeler can see some coral in 15 feet of water or less?

Kendra

Hi Kendra - go look at at Darlene and Tom's trip report and pictures under the trip report thread - The pics were taken from snorkeling and I think Darlene mentioned this sites.
I would put the link - but there was about 5 threads Darlene opened with the trip report and pics!!!

I'm not a snorkler but from the posts I read on BT, Oil Slick Leap seems to be a biggie for snorklers. Just thought I'd throw that out.

Besides Oil Slick we also recommend Andrea I and II and a drift off Klein. A night snorkel from town Oier to Divi will reveal lots of vivid coral.

We just returned from snorkeling on Bonaire and I can tell you our favorite coral sightings. Karpata was number one, we entered at the cement slab and snorkeled left (South) out in the deeper stuff, then a good 15 or 20 minutes we headed toward shore and the coral gardens in many places were very nice near the cliffs. It is much shallower along the shore there but we always like to look at the deeper coral for a change too.

We did Oil Slick Leap and the coral is nice there too but I recall it being deeper than at Karpata.

The drift snorkel at Klein from Ebo's reef to No Name was still colorful but you can certainly see the damage in the shallows there too.

Tori's reef is totally nothing coral-wise but one day we hit it on a super clear visability day and the fish life there was so abundant we went back two more times. It was worth the snorkel just to see the fish even though the coral is non-existent.

Andrea I has some great coral still when you enter and go to the South (left). We did a drift snorkel from Hato all the way North to Andrea II and it was actually our best fish and coral day ever. So many species, tons of coral in colorful condition, the trick is finding a place to get in down in the Hato area.

We did a night snorkel from a small pier at ChaCha beach over toward town pier and saw a huge green moray eel in the rocks along shore just before town pier. This was our first time night snorkeling and so worth the effort. We saw lots of lobster and the water just glittered with the light shining into the eyes of what I think were tiny shrimp all along the rocks. We were warned to be careful not to step on the scorpion fish though as you enter and exit the water, but that is usually only a problem if you enter or exit in a rocky area. We did shine our flashlights on the sand when we were getting in and out just to make sure.
