Hi - we are headed to Bonaire for the first time. We don't dive but love to snorkel. We've been to St. John twice - which we loved. We just tried Grand Cayman. We were a little disappointed there. The fish life was wonderful and water clarity great but the coral was lacking. I've read a lot of threads about snorkeling here and I have "Shore Diving Made Easy" plus a couple of other guide books. When some people refer to a great spot, it is the fish they found. We love that too, but would really like to find some colorful and diverse coral/sponges, etc. Do any of you have favorite places that are really outstanding for the coral for snorkelers, or are they all!?
Thanks, sue

p.s. Those who have stayed at Belmar: how is the snorkeling on their house reef? Someone mentioned that the diving was great but couldn't find any mention of snorkeling.

Susan, personally I love Oil Slick Leap for coral. They have impressive staghorn and elkhorn, as well as some good sized fire coral.

You will love Belmar. Right off the dock, if you turn south (left), there is a large rock in shallow water. I hung out there to use up the rest of my air on each dive there. It's fun! Also, there is a little bit of sea life right around the docks. It's a short swim to the drop off, but Belmar is great! My husband only snorkels, and his favorite was Oil Slick Leap. Lots and lots to see right off the "leap".

Hope this helps a bit. Enjoy Bonaire !

Susan, Make sure you do a night snorkle. Thats when the coral is all bloomed out. Its very nice.

Susan, We just returned from 2 wonderful weeks on Bonaire. My husband dives and I snorkel. Shore snorkeling is wonderful but nothing compares to the coral on Klein. Please consider taking a dive boat out to Klein. You maybe the only snorkelers on the boat so you need to be comfortable snorkeling alone. We went with Bonaire Dive & Adventure. They were wonderful. Only $14 to snorkel. My favorite locations were the Forest and Rock Pile.

Guys, we are going in 3 days! Can we snorkel anywhere and without a guide? We usually dive mornings and nights and love to snorkel in afternoons. Is it possible everywhere? We never being to Bonaire before.

I highly recommend a snorkel trip to Klein on the Woodwind with Dee and Ulf.
http://www.woodwindbonaire.com/

And a night snorkel of Town Pier with Dee too !! I am a diver and rarely will give up dive time to snorkel - but I was very glad I did for these two snorkels :-)

If you can find it, Hidden Beach on the south part of the island has fabulous coral. We were just there two weeks ago. See my trip report entitled, "16 WONDERFUL DAYS ON BONAIRE."
