The forcast is for thunderstorms every day for next two weeks. What will that do to the snorkleing. I have found ususlly rain wrecks vision underwater. Or are predictions for scattered thunderstorms typical for this time of year and they pop up here and there like in florida. It can rain two miles away and I wont see a drop.

I can't speak to the last two weeks as I was last down just about three weeks ago. I know that a few websites almost seem to have a default forecast of t-storms for Bonaire -- and it did not typically match reality. In other words, I doubt it has been non-stop t-storms (especially over much of the island. You can always check http://www.bonairewebcams.com/TheWorks.php to see the current weather at web cams showing the weather.

Because Bonaire has less run off (i.e., no rivers) than many locations run off does not impact viz as much as it can at some other locations. That said, snorkeling in a t-storm would be a pretty bad idea. More rain can mean more mosquitos...

When we were in Bonaire Oct 9-24, there were a couple of short rainstorms - not even enough to make you think about changing plans. For a number of nights we did see lightning in the distance (past Klein). One night there was a thunderstorm that actually hit Bonaire - it didn't seem that bad though it did cause a small wind reversal.

What happens a lot is that it rains at night. You get up and see that the roads or paths are wet, but drying.

Chris,

More like FL. You are essentially at sea and short showers pass. Also, I think that the weather people just like to use the word 'thunderstorms': many days with that prediction see no rain at all. It is a rare day on Bonaire that has all day rain. Besides, rain just reduces the sun load on snorkelers backs. Snorkelers don't run under cover during rain as divers do, do they???? :–)

So I guess the forecast was right!

Is Bonaire snorklable after all that flooding? Did the fresh water and silt hurt the corals on the coasts?

We were on Bonaire this summer when it rained quite hard a few days. It actually worked to our advantage! First of all, it cooled things down a lot. It is unsufferably hot there in August. But rain also calms the seas, and we were able to snorkel some sites that you ordinarily can't snorkel or that are more difficult if it hasn't rained--like some of the far north end of the island sites and Karpata. And we snorkeled Sorobon reef with Renee in a downpour. She declared it to be "perfect weather" for making that particular snorkel. So don't despair. Rain on Bonaire is not a bad thing.
