Because it seems feasible, and we like to get away from it all and be on our own, my wife and I are considering renting a sea kayak in order to explore and snorkel Klein for a day. We are experienced with kayaking and day tripping, and are planning to pack plenty of food, water, sun protection, etc.

1) Is it feasible to explore Klein by kayak (conditions permitting)? Is Klein "off limits" to kayak rentals? Any recommended kayak rental service/location?
2) Which would be some recommended reefs to snorkel by kayak (any that are accessible only by kayak) Any on the far (west) side of Klein from Bonaire?
3) Are there moorings at the snorkel reef locations?
4) In general, how does snorkeling Klein compare to snorkeling the easier-access reefs of the Bonaire mainland, ie: is it safe to say Klein is more isolated, less crowded, worth the extra effort?
5) Is Klein itself worth exploring? Is it totally deserted or is it civilized?
6) Any additional comments or recommendations would be appreciated.

It should be noted that we are aware of the taxi-drift and the guided snorkel trip options, and are considering those as well. But we really like going it solo, thus the kayak option came into play.

Thanks in advance for your insight!

HI Bob I do not know about a kayak to klein but for the past two years we have rented a boat to go over and it was worth it. we rent it and take two day trips as we go for two weeks. the first time we had dolphins run with us it was great good luck

Jean: That sounds cool. What kind of boat do you rent? Do you dive/snorkle Klein from the boat? Thanks. Marcus.

I can answer a few of the questions. No real reason to kayak to the Klein as there's a regular ferry that will take you there and return. It is deserted, flat and fairly desolate. Great snorkeling there. I would stick to kayaking around Lac Bay and the mangroves, much more interesting and there are guided tours that know the best spots. As far as snorkeling spots they are everywhere on the west side and are pretty much the same as the dive spots. The ones we enjoyed are Andrea I, the Divi and the Tipsy Seagull at the Plaza.

Hi Bob.

My husband and I kayak to Klein quite often.
There are moorings which you can use although we usually bring our kayak up to the beach and snorkel that way. It's also fun exploring the coastline so we get a double adventure that way.

Snorkeling the west side would really depend on the weather and remember there can be current. Not something I usually do without a guide.

Snorkeling Klein is great. Some spots better than the "mainland" but snorkeling on Bonaire is pretty good in general (be sure to snorkel the reef at Sorobon !).

Have fun !

Annette
