"Bonaire is the Caribbean's snorkeling capitol"

Long, long time ago I learned some english at school.
We were taught that a capital city is called capital.
On this board its called capitol.
Is that "US-English"?

Good morning Bob,

The building that the U S congress meets is the capitol. The same term applies to the buildings housing our state legislatures.

The city of Washington,D.C. is the capital. Atlanta is the capital of Georgia. AT least that was my world growing up in the U.S.

Hi John and Bob,

Make that an upper case C for the Capitol Building because it is a proper noun.

Hi Bob:
Like you, I've been puzzled by "the Caribbean's snorkelling capitol"
I looked up capitol in the Oxford English Dictionary and found "from Latin, capitolium; A citadel on the top of a hill; the temple of Jupiter on the Saturnian Hill in Rome; also, the edifice occupied by the congress of the United States. Also, in some states, the state-house".

Among other things, OED lists capital as "standing at the head; the chief town or city"

At first I thought "snorkelling capitol" was a typo, but maybe Jake meant that Bonaire is the citadel of snorkelling sites, sort of an extreme spiritual experience for snorkellers :-)

What's a vowel between friends (unless they are competing on Wheel of Fortuna) ;-)

Mind you, since I'm no longer a principal person in terms of BT management (i.e. I'm not a moderator), I can't fix the poor spelling in the description of this topic on the main board (and yes, it really should have been "capital").

On Bonaire talk we have a topic snorkeling:

I noticed that it said:
Bonaire is the Caribbean's snorkeling capitol - this is where you can discuss snorkeling sites, fish ID, and a myriad of other related things

So in june 2004 I started this discussion.
Fiona restarted it today.

When I use Google I notice that their buffers still say capitol.

So somebody, (please step forward LOL), recently changed capitol in capital.

So all's well that ends well :-)

What Jake, you mean it _was_ a typo? And here I was really hoping for the snorkelling spiritual high point explanation ;-)

Bob, I hadn't been reading this topic for a while, as I was reading the Diving threads, but now I see what a foundation Snorkelling is to BT!

Martin and Freddie, sorry about the unseemly scamble to Snorkelling from Community Chat ;-)
As a writer I get this odd twitch when I see typos (usually they're my own...)

Well, back to avoiding my working weekend.

Yes, Fiona, it was a typo (but I do like the interpretation of why else I might have originally typed "capitol") :-)

Hmm, one of those on-line free translator sites gave me the following:
Boef dat je bent = Scoundrel that you are
Lief ben ik he = Dear I am he
Heel lief = Quite beloved

Perhaps not the exact meaning but maybe the flavour?

Well, not really, Glen, because the colour of this Canadian cheque is red and gray, while the
flavour at the centre of the doughnut is maple walnut ;-)

However, Canadians do put gas in our trucks and air in the tires (instead of petrol in our lorries and air in the tyres as they do in the UK)

My thesaurus is always confused.

Fiona, glad you had some good dives:-) Again, it was weird that the boats coming back were full...but I guess the illegals from Mexico are taking route through Avalon, and on the Catalina Express to the states...no ID or citizen checks...it's a big problem right now for the US Coast Guard....:-( Normally that time of year, there are PLENTY of spaces going and coming...

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By Fiona Rattray (Experienced BonaireTalker - Post #305) on Monday, March 7, 2005 - 12:38 pm:     Edit PostPrint Post

Cynde, I had no idea about the "extra traffic" for the Coast Guard :-( ...the ferry people made it sound like their schedule disruptions were due to the silting up of Long Beach Harbour after all that torrential rain and flooding (Catalina Express only going out of two ports not their regular three). The boat from Catalina to San Pedro was full also, and that was on a Monday...
Catalina gets four stars for cold water diving life forms - all I see here in the Great Lakes are zebra mussels.
These days along the St. Lawrence River, Niagara River and Great Lakes, if a Canadian dive charter wants to dive a wreck on the American side, divers have to take a passport or other ID along and be checked by Coast Guard or US immigration in the nearest American port or border town. The dive shop files a dive plan with them, then you get to dive. If this doen't happen, the dive shops say there are severe penalties for them, like the boat gets seized, so compliance is mandatory :-)
A bit of an extra hassle if you want to dive something fun like the wreck of the Keystorm which is just over the Canadian border in the middle of the St. Lawrence, but rather safe than sorry, eh?
