CAn any one tell me if the current along the shoreline runs in any particular direction. Wanted to consider a drift snorkel up or down the shoreline if possible. For example in Cozumel we took a cab to the southern end of the island and did a half day drift snorkel up the coast to pier in town. Just was wondering if something like that was possible in Bonaire.

John,

There's not a lot of current on Bonaire, especially compared to Cozumel. You'll find some current in certain areas, but in general there's very little.

John,

A couple of great drift snorkels are the drift snorkel on Klein Bonaire (have Kantiki Water Taxi take you over - it was $36 for two of us to do the drift snorkel and rent 2 chairs for use when we returned to the beach where we would be picked up) and the drift snorkel from La Dania's Leap to Karpata.

Belinda,

How long was the drift snorkel on Klein Bonaire? We were planning on doing that and thought we might walk around to some other sites on the island as well.

You could try the Woodwind for a great morning of sailing with the drift snorkel over at Kline included as well as lunch and open bar with a second snorkel stop also included.

You could also contact Renee at reneesnorkeltrips.com and hire her for a day of great snorkeling. Her prices are very reasonable and she knows where all the little critters are. She will pretty much do what ever you are looking for.

John,

We very, very casually floated the drift snorkel on Klein and it took us an hour and forty-five minutes. It was really, really awesome.

One note - we were glad that we had lycra dive skins because close in to the reef there were thousands and thousands of little jelly fish that we were floating through. Another poster mentioned running into them too and they could feel tiny stings. I wear a full lycra suit and hood to keep from getting sunburned when I snorkel and I never felt any stings. Don't let that discourage you from doing the drift snorkel however - it was so well worth it!

I agree with Darlene . . . . go with Dee on the Woodwind over to Kline Bonaire for drift snorkeling, and go with Renee for drift snorkeling on the main island.
However, I really didn't notice much current on either place.

What are Renee's rates for a couple of hours of lesson and snorkel for 2 hours?

Do you need to reserve a long time in advance?

I e-mailed her 3 days ago. so far no response.

On the leeward side, currents are typically light (and sometimes none) and vary day to day. As a snorkeler, my guess is that the surface currents will matter the most (and they tend to be driven, at least in part, by the wind). (For divers: I have also encountered currents running north at one depth and south at another).

A ripping current by Bonaire standards would be a half knot.

If you go in the south, you can pretty much drift it whatever way it is going and get out whenever you feel like it and walk back to the car.

Her prices are located on her web site. WWW.reneesnorkeltrips.com. You can make reservations on her web site or you can call her once on island. She needs some notice as she is managing Liz's Inn as well. I know that she only checks her emails a couple of times a weeks so you still may hear from her soon.
