My wife and I are considering investing in full lycra dive skins for our first trip. Then I thought about what to wear when out of the water. What DO you wear out of the water while driving between snorkeling sites if you wear a skin in the water? Do you wear a bathing suit under the skin? Are full skins too hot to wear when out of the water? Do people care if you get naked on the roadside changing in and out of your skin?

Also, is a hood a good investment for snorkelers?

I wear a swim suit under my full skin. Out of the water I pull the skin down to my waist. I find that by the time we have packed away the dive gear and had a drink the suit is dry enough and I can get in the truck with only a towel on the seat. Remember the sun screen:-)

Julia, I do the same as you,tie the arms of the dive skin around my waist, except that I'll throw on a t-shirt or some other cover-up to protect me from the sun until I'm ready to put my dive skin back on. I wear a hood also, to protect the top of my head from the sun while snorkeling, I have had been burned up there and then it peels and I look like I have terrible dandruff. Also the hood holds my hair in place and keeps it out of my face.

I wear a skin for both diving and snorkeling. The swim suit I wear under it varies. The speedo type are easier to deal with but any type will do. After the dive/snorkel I take the skin off at the site and wear the swim suit and t-shirt home. For changing beside the road, if I do change it's in the truck or you can take a big beach towel and use it as a portable changing room.

A hood is not needed for thermal protection but some form of headgear does help with sunburn. A big floppy hat can help. If sunburn on your neck is a concern, a lycra hood with a cape is useful. Myself, I wear a dew rag, the skull cap rag thing that bikers and welders wear (actually a Dee rag, made by a friend of mine named Dee-drop me an email if you want her web site). All of the above help keep my hair out of my face.

Thanks everyone,
We will wear bathing suits when we go to the shop to try them on.

I have developed some SuperShoods - a Shirt and a Hood and when you wear the Hood, you look like a SuperHero. Kinda like a half dive skin that I also wear anywhere, especially on my boyfriend's bike. I also make HoodlessShoods. I do not have them on the website yet but you can email if you like. I also make ScubaDoRags, now patented both made out of the same silky swimsuit fabric that is very comfortable and, unlike cotton, it dries quickly.
