Hi,
I am going to Bonaire at the end of April.
Do you think there is a need to wear wetsuit while snorkeling? I won't be diving. I am thinking of getting 3mm shorty. I tend to get cold easily. What are rental costs?

Thanks!
Karen

Karen, if you tend to get cold easy, I would definitely suggest the 3mm shorty, or even a full suit. If you rent, you can always get a thicker/fuller suit if you need to. The other good reason is it protects you from sunburn. Where are you staying? Most dive shops rent gear, if you go to the dive shop website they usually have gear rental prices listed.

I get cold very easily and now I wear a 2mil skin with a long sleeve shortie over it. I do stay in the water for a long period of time and that makes a difference.

We snorkeled Bonaire in October and were glad for our 2mm shorties...in fact I would have liked a full for extra sun protection. If you get cold easily I would go with the 3mm and would consider a full suit...You will also need hard sole booties to get into the water.

We've snorkeled St. John in January only wore our bathing suits. The only time we felt a chill was when the sun went behind clouds for a period of time. Otherwise we were fine. Is the water near Bonaire that much colder than the water near St. John?

For snorklers, probable not. However, what was the water temp near St. John ????

I will be making my first trip to Bonaire the first week of Aug. What is the weather like that time of year? How about the water temp? Will I need a wet suit? I have sooooo many questions

Katie, if you are a diver I strongly recommend a 3mil one-piece wetsuit. Although the water temps are usually 80-81, the suit will assist in maintaining your thermal core as well as providing protection against the infrequent jellyfish sting and accident brush with coral (especially fire coral).

Katie, August is HOT...but you will still love it! I agree with C.K...3mil will work fine. That's what I use, but then again my husband dives in shorts and a t-shirt and is hot! So it depends on your body type and how cold you get, and also how many dives you are going to be doing in a day....
