I am a pediatric intensivist - neonatologist who is considering retirement to Bonaire. Is there any mechanism to offer one's services gratis to a local medical facility? Can you direct me to any other resource information. Obviously my medical license from the US will not apply in Bonaire but if one is not charging for one's services and is board certified, can one do so?

Hi James--even if you offer your services for free, I believe the challenge will be that you probably don't speak Papiamento, Dutch and Spanish. Local doctors speak at least Dutch and English, as well as Papiamento; most speak all 4 languages. Maybe you can find a way to contribute to one of the medical schools, which are taught in English?

Hi Doc! Ruth is always right but you might want to also think outside the box to help in non- traditional ways. With your experience and wealth of expertise there is so much you can offer-I always wondered why there isn't a mechanism for volunteering all the skills Americans bring to the island-lifetimes of valuable experiences such as yours should not be wasted! You might want to contact the hospital administrator, people like Michael Gaynor, Jake Richter, and other true grass roots community leaders (of which Ruth is one of course.) Don't stop trying, Bonaire needs you but still needs a mechanism to help you channel your talents...

I am in a similar situation, as I am a practicing nursery/intensive care nursery/ postpartum nurse of 18 yrs and not quite ready to give up the trade. I am, however, ready to find my little spot on Bonaire. It would be great to find a job on the island rather than trying to do some travel nursing.

again ... it is very simple matter... no matter the level of your expertise... if you don't have the languages employment or even volunteering is next to impossible. if at all. next time you are on Bonaire, talk to a medical professional here. I recommend Dr. vd Vaart.
