Hi all Bonaire talkers!,I recently read in the bonairean newspaper EXTRA that immigrations laws have been modified, and there are many points that were confusing to me and if you know more about this than me,please I would thank you if somebody makes it clearer.According to the article the maximum time for an alien to work in Bonaire will be three years if work permit is renewed,I mean, the work permit will last one year and will only be renewed two more times so it makes me wonder that aliens won´t be able to get permanent residence on the island,am I right or I misunderstood?

You misunderstand one important point: the business is issued a work permit, not the person. When I hire an immigrant, I receive a work permit to have that person in that position. He can't take another job unless the new employer gets him a new permit. I can't put another immigrant in that job unless I get a new permit.

What this is aimed at is employers that repeatedly hire foreigners. Instead of just renewing a foreign workers's permits every year, the employer will have to readvertise for local labor at least every three years.

It will reduce the ability of immigrants to get work permits, but it won't put an absolute limit on renewals, either. An immigrant will have to change jobs every few years, though.

I'm not at all clear what will happen to a business that absolutely cannot find a suitable local employee ... there has to be a waiver process, but I don't know what it is.
