Hi All,

Other than the tourist industry are there shortages of other skilled trades on Bonaire?

Hi Mick.
Assuming that you are neither Antillian or Dutch, getting employment on Bonaire is a pain.

You would have absolutely no chance getting unskilled work (bars, restaurants etc) as the employment office would deem it to be work that a Bonarian could do. That is fair enough, however, if they did not find a Bonarian, the job could be filled by someone Dutch regardless of experience.

If you do hold qualifications in a trade or skill, the person applying for a work permit would have to enquire that there are no Bonarians with that skill. If there is not, your prospective employer can start the process of applying for a work permit.

This can take between 6 and 12 weeks. You would have to supply letters of reference and copies of your qualifications as well as a fee (varies on where you are from). The position has to be advertised in local newspapers to give others the chance to apply.

If you fill the criteria and lady luck is behind you, you may be issued with a permit. A renewal of the permit has to be applied for annually.

Good luck.............

Actually, Antony, you don't have to be unable to hire a Bonairean before hiring a Dutchman. You can hire someone with a Dutch passport without any special procedures at all.

Permit renewals tend not to be much of a problem for anyone. Once you manage to get one, they primarily look at the applicant's behaviour when renewing. You don't have to demonstrate that you couldn't hire a Bonairean again.

Just to clarify mr williams statement, a Dutch passport holder can work here for 3 months but at the end of that time, the do have to give proof of good conduct, good health, copies of their work contract and a few other requirements. There are some other formalities, but it is far easier for them than say US or South Americans to work here.

If you check out this weeks Bonaire Reporter, you will see that new legislation has come in to make it even more difficult for non skilled persons to work on Bonaire.

Kevin, for whatever reason, I have not been to the Great Escape for weeks, a sin I know. I will make it my business to call in during the week. I have two recent copies of Practical Classics for you!

I find it curious that if you hold a EU passport you cannot work here without the whole process that Michael describes. I hold a US and EU passport and still must do extensive paperwork. In turn if I live in Holland or ANY EU country I do not need to go thru the same process. Odd eh??

Hi Ann.

I too find it strange. I am in support of doing all that is possible for local people to get work. However, if there are no locals available than it would be fairer to open the position up for all residents, regardless of nationality.

I do realise that Bonaire is part of the Dutch Kingdom but it seems to be a very discriminatory system which allows someone from the Netherlands to take a position for which they have no qualifications or experience in preference to a qualified person from another country.

There should be more equality as within the EU. If someone travels to the UK from Holland to work, they have the same rights as a native Brit.

If there are no Bonarians able to fill the position then employ the most suitable applicant, regardless of race, colour or creed.

My understanding is that one of the major discussion points on the "direct ties to Holland" discussion is what to do with our work permit system. We have a lot of permits issued to people from adjacent countries that would have a hard time getting permits under Dutch law, and a lot of obstacles in the way of permits that would be virtually automatic under Dutch law.

Antony and Kevin,
What a small world... I am (among other things) the US distributor for Practical Classics. Tell me how many copies you need and I'll bring the September issues (or even October) in August when I come.
Carl

I only need one. If you want, you could let Practical Classics know that the owner of the only Morris Minor pickup in South America would be happy to be the star of a feature article ...

I too have noticed your truck and agree it is a great restoration. I guess you brought it with you from the states. I have found Bruce Bowkers cars on line also. I assume you know by now that he has 4 or 5 British collector cars in New Jersey. All restored of coarse. I think it's probably hard to keep ahead of the climate in Bonaire.

I'll drop by and take some pictures of your vehicle for the mag as an introduction; wow! I can write the trip off as a business expense! ;-)

If you know of some other vintage autos on island I would be happy to check them out.

Carl,
Happy to have you take a picture. Let me know in advance so that he will be shiny. I'll hit the engine (Shorrocks supercharged 948, BTW) with a degreaser, too.

Most of the other British classics are old Land Rovers, but there is an old Hillman suitable for a "Rust in Peace" shot. I've heard rumors of a classic Mini on Bonaire, but I haven't seen it.

Hi Kevin.

I will see you Friday. I have June & July issues of PC to give you.

Carl, it would be great if there was some way of setting up a subscription to the mag. A $1000 ticket to the UK is a bit much every month, even for a copy of Practical Classics. Hope to get a chance for a chat when you are on Bonaire.

Tony..............

Absolutely. More than happy to send a package occasionally with the latest copies; I send packages down every couple of months, but as you said, cheaper than a few hundred quid and a couple of days to get one.

And you would think the Flamingo Bookstore would carry it!

I'll be down Aug19-26, be in touch before.

Maybe the Airport shop would be a better bet as many English speaking tourists and transit passengers go through there.......
