I'm copying and pasting Marilyn's request in a new thread here in Moving to Bonaire. Marilyn needs some assistance on how to accomplish getting her dog to Bonaire.

Can't figure out where else to post this, but, if I move to Bonaire, how do I get my beloved pet DOG, Maggie there, and what are the rules and regulations involved. She's about 62 lbs and half Rottweiler and half Australian Cattle Herder. Got her at the shelter at the North Shore Animal League in Long Island as a puppy! She's chock full of personality, sings, and picks me up - by the armpits - (literally) when I get sick. She means the world to me. Anyone bring their dog when they moved to Bonaire?

Marilyn, I did find 3 links with some information. If you don't find the answers you need, please post your question in this thread and I'm sure folks will help you with what you need.

Good luck!

Wow Ann... they actually will transport a pit bull? I'm not dissing the breed (most of them I've met are sweeties with people)... I thought I remembered hearing about some airlines not willing to transport "dangerous" breeds. (In my experience that would mean Chihuahua's, Cocker Spaniels, etc, LOL!)

Hi Becky & Marilyn,

Becky, you are right, most airlines do have dangerous breed lists. When it comes to shipping a dog, I imagine it all depends on what you tell the airline, who is there when you check in, and what your vet has put on the form for breed. I advise with any mixed breeds (the best sort of dog in my opinion!) that you list benign-sounding breeds on their paperwork just to be safe...

Be sure to check with any/all airlines involved regarding any temperature restrictions--depending on the time of year, you may run the risk of being stuck in San Juan because it's too hot for Miss Maggie to travel (or to be more precise, to be stuck on the runway). I believe the magic temperature is 85 degrees, and there (at least used to be) certain times of the year when you could not fly pets through SJU, or at least run a greater risk of getting stuck . I know this was an issue when we brought our pets here.

Good luck! I'm sure Maggie will love it here.

Becky, I was in line at AA and this man I know was there with his son and his son's dog, a pit bull for sure..they checked him on the plane. I know Bermuda will not allow about 20 breeds of planes into the country...don't know AA's rules but this family resides in BON all winter, has been for many years...and the dogs travels with them...BTW, my Luci is part pit bull, I got her in Bonaire when she was 3 weeks old (the owner would not keep her til 8 weeks) and she is the most docile and loving girl..but she is a very good watch dog as well....look out burglars..(wink)...it's my 5 cats that are vivious..haa..

I thought instead of starting a new thread I'd just bring this one back to the top. We're looking at bringing our "Buddy" down this fall. He's a 60 lb Retriever. So I did some "Googling" on flying with dogs generally and found some interesting stuff. First, many websites say the airlines aren't required to report anything about problems (deaths, injuries, etc.) regarding pets on planes, but that's no longer true. In the US reports have been required since May 2005. I added up all the reports so far and on average there are about 4.5 incidents per month: 2.3 deaths, 1.4 injuries and 0.7 lost pets. There's a great website http://www.petflight.com/pet-travel-reports
that's constantly updated and let's you read all the reports.

Overall it made me feel a little better; most of the incidents are pets escaping because people open the kennel door (use a zip tie), or the pet is really old or just had surgery. Seems short nosed dogs (pugs, etc.) have the biggest risk. Of course there's sad stories too. While I couldn't ever find a solid number about how many pets fly each year, one Continental report said they flew 10,934 in July 06 alone, so extrapolating from their share of the market, it works out to about 1.7 million pets flown in the US each year. If I've done the math right, it means the odds of anything happening to your pet on a flight is 0.00314% or 1 per 32,000 flights.

Now have to set up some flights and be sure AA through CUR and then Divi Divi will still take him; seems to be varying reports listed on the three threads listed above. I'll post what I find out.

Bruce, you might find this page useful:
https://aacargo.com/shipping/animals.jhtml

With a 60 lb dog, you might find it easier to go AA/AE thru San Juan. I don't know that Divi Divi can handle a dog that size. (...but I don't know that they can't either!)

HTH!

My friends flew with their boxer from BON to SJU and then to DFW, overnighted there so he could stretch, eat and what not and then on to SFO. He did great. If Buddy would be coming for a vacation I would send him to a great kennel. IMHO it is too traumatic for a short trip.

Thanks all. I'm checking with Divi Divi. He'd fit in a 400 series (36 x 24 x 26 inches) and that's fine for AA.

Ann, we bought a house last year and are looking at coming down for a couple months, otherwise I agree.
