I plan on moving to Bonaire in September 2004 to attend the med school.

I am visiting in May. Can anyone provide me with tips of places to visit and see that will give me an accurate depiction of life/living in Bonaire.

I plan on visiting the Elem. School near the med school, some of the available housing and some restaurants... Any other suggestions or groups.

I don't want to know why you have an interest in visiting the Elementary School...

It seems to me that things were a little different in Rincon. A little less touristy, and a little more real.

There is also this corner diner in town - you walk up to the window and place an order... You will know it when you see it. It is the only place that was open after 11:00 P.M. (I think it is near the Harley Davidson shop, which may no longer be there). Hang out there late at night... You'll be safe, I think, but it is a little different.

Don't order the chicken.

To see how things really are on the island, stick your head in the water. I hope you are a certified diver. If not, you will be.

If you want to decide on housing, go in with some other people, you can probably afford to rent an awesome house, i.e., on the water, via a long term lease. Take a look at sunbelt.an, sunrentals.an, and harbourtownbonaire...

Grocery stores because shopping is always an interesting experience on Bonaire. Sometimes it takes 4-5 stops to get most of your shopping done with items still not found. Be sure to shop Friday afternoon for the most selection.

Bonaire Super Store and Tung Fung Store which are Bonaire's answer to WalMart but looks like the 5 and 10 from decades ago. Take a trip to the Botica to check out how they handle medicines even OTCs come from behind the counter.

As every BTer knows eat at Gibi's for local food. Try the small local snacks. You will find the prices half of the resort restaurants.

Go to Windsock/Donkey beach, Sorobon, or Pink Beach on the weekend when locals go.

When you check the schools ask about Skol di Bario. It is an afternoon program. Kids in Elementary grades go to school from 7:30-12:30 only.
