I emailed a couple weeks back to ask where the women of Bonaire deliver their babies and get ob/gyn care since I am a nurse-midwife in the states and am interested in relocating to the islands. I am fascinated by Bonaire and love your website and the webcams. Can anyone provide me with information about health care on Bonaire?
Thanks, Gwenne Baile

Gwen, I moved your topic to the "Moving to Bonaire" category. You may want to search the tree view of this category, your question has been discussed at some length I believe. Just go to the bottom and click on "Topics" and then scroll down to "Moving to Bonaire."

Good luck!

Gwen, there is a mid-wife on the island who delivers most of the babies at home. The Bonaire Reporter had a nice artical about her sometime mid 2003. You could probably find it in the online archives or by contacting George or Laura DeSalvo. My friend, Caren Eckrich, had her deliver both of her girls.....she's a busy woman and could probably use some help! Start learning Papiamentu or Dutch!

Since our national health care, and I believe even most local-private insurances are like big HMO's'd be in the US, you have to see your house dr. first for any ob/gyn care you might require--only if it's something beyond his/her realm, are you approved (referred) to see an actual specialist dr. ob/gyn. I believe the house dr. even delivers babies in most cases, unless it's a high risk circumstance (then the mother is airlifted to Curacao). I know there was talk of Bonaire getting its own ob/gyn dr., but I don't know if this already happened. If we do not have our own yet, it'd be like seeing all other specialist dr.s-a trip to Curacao.

For example--you want to get a pap smear. Your regualar house dr. does this--but not like you'd imagine. Here, it's the same procedure as in the US, up to the point where the dr. hands you the petri dish...you then have to take your own pap test to the lab (this is not in the dr's office), and pay about $10 to have it processed. Later, the results are sent back to your house dr. The $10 includes the results.
