I've been wading through the 1000 picture I took over two weeks and these will be the picks. Mixed emotions about the new camera, it definitely has the David Ortez syndrome, out of the park when it connects, real ugly when it strikes out.

Excellent photos! How close do you have to be to get photos like that?

Pretty darn close, less than 8 inches, generally. My camera has a 28mm lens and is a little wider than most which means I have to get even closer and I had serious problems with pissing off the critters this last trip. You've heard of fish whisperers, well I'm a fish pisser-offer.

Cecil, I would say it was a basketstar in for the day.

I agree with Patrick on the mystery ball... Basket star in it's daytime mode.

Some addition info. All shots are with an Olympus T6000 camera in a Olympus PT-47 UW housing and edited in Photoshop (sometimes to much methinks).

Camera pros and cons, pros; small size, flat case (much less lens shawdowing), relatively inexpensive ($400 for camera and housing), camera is waterproof (may save you in a flood), excellent white balance, excellent large bright LCD, did I mention very small, and a 28mm lens.

Cons; Lack of manual controls, no raw output, not remembering previous settings on boot-up (you have to redo every time you power up), LACK OF MANUAL CONTROLS and LACK OF MANUAL CONTROLS. You depend of the software weenies for f-stop, shutter speed and flash power, never a good thing.

But other than that, great camera.

Awesome pics! I'm no expert so sorry if this is wrong but I don't think that's a honeycomb filefish. I think it's a trunk fish.

If that's a basketstar, that's a really cool thing it does to conceal itself. Neat find.

Hmm, ok. How do you tell difference between cowfish and trunkfish??? Just when I think I'm getting it...

After looking at some pics on the web, it appears that cowfish have antennae and trunkfish have big lips. Other than that, they appear to be closely related. I'm going to call all of them crunkfish and then I won't have to remember anything! :H

I knew due to other shots that show the horns, he was also significantly bigger than a trunkfish, another something that the picture does not show. Here's another view.

Cecil... I see this camera as great for up close and personal.... me thinks it would be either difficult or impossible to get the exposure of the sun and then fill with strobe light so you get the beautiful sunlit blue above and colors of the subject in the main of the picture.... am I right about this???? Beautiful pics by the way and pretty affordable...

You would have to get lucky, I do have some shots like that coming up but getting enough strobe power on the close subject is the problem.
