Now that I am back from Bonaire, have a LOT of pictures to go through and cull out, I am looking for suggestions as to software recommendations for use with Windows XP Home. I shot entirely in RAW, I don't want to spend a fortune on the software but would like the ability to manipulate some of the colors, backgrounds, etc. in the pictures.

Any suggestions from you camera buffs?

Well Gail the standard recommendation is Adobe Photoshop. I would suspect that Photoshop Elements can do everything you need and it retails for $99 or there abouts.

I have Photoshop elements ($90+or-) and Photoshop 7 (very pricey). I've found that many of the tools and features are similar. One feature that both of these has is the ability to work in layers. being able to isolate and edit different parts of the photo without effecting anything else is huge...visualize stacks of clear acetate on top of the original and only editing (color, brightness, contrast, you name it) the precise area you want. I could go on and on but, you get the idea.

You could also try GIMP. It is open source and free.

You can look for some online tutorials to help you get started.

I would also recommend Adobe Photoshop Elements 7. An excellent tool with likely all the features you will need at a very reasonable price. The first recommendation on editing is to establish the white balance on each photo.
