I just purchased a G9 with the Canon UW housing and will take photos while snorkeling to depths of 12 feet in sunlight. Am I correct in saying that there is no external strobe capability with this? I presume that I would take all underwater photos in underwater mode, with the flash on and use the diffusion plate? Also, do I need the WW-DC1 weights?

You can always connect an external strobe with a slave cable. If you are only snorkeling I do not see the need for an external strobe. You do want to force on the flash for just about any UW picture. The weight does not seem like a good idea while snorkeling. This is for divers, we hate floaty cameras.

I also own the G9 and its flash is more than sufficient to about 40 feet, unless it is really cloudy. If you set it up to shoot RAW, you should even be able to 'push' those enough to forego an external strobe all the time. This is one of the main reasons I chose the G9 and stopped using my Oly5050 & Ike strobe.

The Canon G9 will take great pics all by itself. It is truly remarkable at the macro photography end. Practice it around the house. Use the center focus single frame and whatever you have in that frame and get the green light on will have amazing clarity. One other thing when you get underwater if your not use to it is before taking a shot shake lightly back and forth the camera so that any air bubbles are removed from the lens.

I've been reading all the recommendations here and researching on the internet. If you had the option between buying a Canon A650 IS, a Canon G9, a Canon G10 or a Canon SD990 IS which would you buy and why? I've done a lot of U/W photography but with a Nikonsis V, sold that when my dive partner got tired of diving with a photographer, then decided last year to rent an A650 IS from Buddy's. Now instead of spending money on a rental again thought I would invest in something I can use both U/W and topside. Your comments & suggestions are greatly appreciated. I would like to get something fairly soon so I can be prepared for our trip to Bonaire on May 2.

I like the 650 IS because of the rotating flip out viewfinder. For me that is a good option because I travel alone quite a bit and allows me to get into pics. The key feature on the Canons is the underwater mode under SCN. It takes the blue out for the better part.

You know it's funny but I cannot find any site where someone has reviewed the A650 IS? Even the site mentioned above. Why do you figure that is? I can find some new and used 650 IS and both new & used G10s. Just wish I could read side by side reviews. I realize that the A650 IS is outdated but it's size is what interests me, plus the fact I used this camera last year for my U/W shots. Can't seem to get in touch with John at Buddy's to see if they have changed their rental camera to another.

I actually went back to dpreview.com and although I could have sworn that the A650 IS was not in the list to do a side by side comparison it suddenly was. So I was able to pull up a SBS of the G10, SD990IS and the A650IS. Now I just have to read it and determine which is best for what I have to spend!
