Anyone using this camera underwater yet? It has the HD video capability which sounds very nice and it is a 12 megapixel camera. Ikelite has a typical housing. Any thoughts?

Walk away from the Ikelite housing, it is too darned big and heavy. I bought one for my Nikon SLR and used it on two trips, never again, I bought a Sea & Sea housing and loved it. I still have the Ikelite housing. I sold the ports on Ebay but can't get shot of the body and thanks for the prompt it will go in the trash can today.

BTW I called the camera in the Ike housing Godzilla and had to add just over 4lbs of weight to make it neutrally buoyant.

Brian - thanks. I do use the Ikelite system for my Nikon D70 so will not expend funds to change that. I was mostly wondering about the video capability of the D90 underwater, lighting, filters, etc. Should I invest in the D90 I will seriously look at the Sea and Sea system.

My Ikelite / D70 system with the 125 strobe is about 2+ lbs negative it seems. I can remove 2-4 pounds of weight when I dive with this system.

Thanks for the info and any additional D90 experience you can share.

Dan,

I just acquired my D90 and Ikelite housing. Brian is right about it being big and heavy, but budgetary issues limited my choices and Ikelite does have a good reputation. Sea & Sea do not offer a housing for the D90 yet, so that's not an option.

I'll be testing it out in a few weeks and will let you know how it performs. My guess is that the same basic limitations for the HD movies applies below water as above. Focus being the main issue.

Hi Steve

Did you open Bob's treats and saw the snake?

I should add I have had a range of Nikon SLRs and DSLRs, the Ike housing I had was for the F80 and I am sure Ikelite have improved, my D70 and now D80 and Sues F80 & D50 have all been Sea&Sea housed. I do like the idea of Video and the D90 looks interesting, I think my next upgrade will be to the next release of this technology. Gents I would love to see what the video looks like.

Hi Brian,

Loved the can with the snake in it.

Having messed around a little with the movie feature on the D90, I would not make a decision to buy on that. It's OK, but not a deal closer. I don't think you'd find enough difference between your D80 and the D90 to spend the money. The image quality is so similar, you wouldn't be able to tell the difference. Live View is not good for underwater, so that doesn't add much if you are using the D90 primarily underwater.

Don't get me wrong... I am in seventh heaven over this camera and the housing. Both appear to be very well built and I can't wait to try them out in Bonaire in a couple of weeks.

I am jealous of all the equipment you have. LOL

Brian, Steve - thanks for all the info. I am not in the final decision mode yet but your input helps a bunch.
