Hi,

I have a new SeaLife DC600 that came with a separate wide angle lens. I know from my research that I should use the wide angle lens as my primary lens while diving, to reduce distance (and water) between me and my subject.

My question is: when do I attach the lens? I recall hearing that the lens should be attached while underwater, to create a 'pocket' of water between the wide angle lens and the camera?

Does this sound reasonable?

Thanks a lot!

Dan

Hi Dan
I have a DC600 as well.
If you attach the lens before entering the water take it off in the water & make sure there are no bubbles between the lens & housing. Also might have to be done if you pass over your buddy's bubbles.I don't use it as my "primary" lens as it creates distortion & black in the corners of your shots.By the way if you flood it its better to get another camera than get a refurb from Sealife.
Good Luck

Dan,
I do not know anything about the DC600 but can tell you conceptually on any housing. Rolf is right about not using the Wide Angle lens as your primary port. It really all depends what your subject is and sounds like you can attach the WA lens while in the water. That is the PERFECT scenario. Bonaire's west side is known for its macro critters and the last thing you want is a speck on your image that you say "Look at the blenny shot here." That's just what you will have. I shoot video using a macro setting inside the housing as tight as possible for the normal shots and when something "big" comes along you pop that WA lens on the the exterior of the lens port and you're ready to go in 5 seconds for those wide shots. Then when completed return the WA port back and continue shooting your macros. The exception to this concept is when you dive the Hilma Hooker you want to start with your WA port initially and then as you are returning to shore you should remove it as you are back to macro critters in the reef. Good luck!

Thanks Greg and Rolf. What you both say makes sense - now I just need another dive vacation to try this out!

And...great videos, Greg.
