Hello, I have an Olympus C-8080 with and Olympus PT-023 housing. I would like to add at least one strobe light before my October 20 - 27th Bonaire trip. Any recommendations on something affordable that will work well for this camera and housing?

Thanks!

One of the Inons with a fiber optic connection would work well with the 8080. Either the D2000 or the D2000S will work. I would spend the extra on the D2000, mainly because of the modeling light.

Has anyone used the Sunpak G-Flash? It is available new for $179.99 with $8.00 shipping? I was thinking this would be a cheap option for my Olympus C-8080.

It will work but your going to have lots of trouble with backscatter. To avoid backscatter you must be able to do 2 things.
(A)get the strobe a good distance from the camera
(B) Turn off or block the internal strobe.

This strobe requires you to keep the internal strobe on AND not block it. It uses the light from the internal strobe to slave off of. Alignment also becomes a problem, esp for macro shots. You really need some form of fiber or electric connection to your camera if you want quality, backscatter reduced (darn near impossible to get all of it out) photos.

Another possible strobe is the YS 25. It's not very powerful but would work well with the camera. The fiber cable is an option but available and it has some auto functions that make it a better choice than the SP-G.
What I guess I am trying to say with all of this is you have a camera capable of very good photography (I shoot a C-5050), you need a strobe that is up to challenge. The inexpensive ones just don't have the features you need.

I've never used it or seen one. It's cheap, that's for sure, cheapest on the market. Looks like it can give a lot of flashes per charge from just 2 AA's but the recharge time is 7.5-9.0 seconds. That's the longest wait time between shots I've seen. Ike DS-50 is just 3 seconds. It would drive me nuts.

Here's a great strobe comparison resource:

OK. I found a used INON z220s. I need a tray and arm to mount this strobe. Any hints on who is most reasonable to buy from? Is a cable available to hook to the Olympus c-8080 and PT-023 underwater housing?

Thanks!

Vernon

I recently purchased and used a Sea & Sea YS-110 and fiber optic connector from Tim at Fish Eye Photo and took some great UW shots with my Olympus C8080. I recommend it, but it's definitely not the cheapest strobe on the market.

Ok. Thanks for all of the input so far guys! I am now looking at purchasing 2 used Sea&Sea YS-90DX DUO TTL Strobes. Does anyone use these with the Olympus C-8080 and PT-023 housing? What would the least expensive (acceptable) arm system to use with this housing and 2 of these strobes?

Vernon, you could also consider a Sea & Sea YS-27.
There are very easy to use and relative cheap.
I would start with one strobe, its hard enough as it is. When you master using one, you can always ad a second. At Fish Eye Photo they sell double trays, arms and the strobes. Ask for Tim, he can give you good advise.
